Death by carbolic acid shocks community

William Beckwith, about 50, ended his life with carbolic acid at the home of ET Grube on Ralston avenue after a history of drunkenness and family separation. He died on the sidewalk minutes after drinking the poison, witnessed by his children and the Grube family. Funeral at the Grube residence followed by burial in Riverside cemetery. several relatives and locals noted his troubled life and recent attempts at reconciliation.

Need of new laboratory at local high school

The board of education discussed the necessity of a better equipped laboratory at the high school. with 176 students next year including 29 in physics, the current physical lab is below first class standards. A decision on funding and purchases was postponed, while repairs, building inspections, and payrolls were noted alongside a retirement resolution for Superintendent Mitchell.

Depot site change eyed for Defiance B&O action

Mr. T J Frazier, assistant real estate agent for the B & O, says a relocation of the Defiance depot to Latty grove on Clinton street has been suggested but not acted on. The railroad would require guaranteed grounds and local revenue to justify removal. The freight business exceeds $30,000 monthly, and a central passenger depot could boost local shipments and B&O business.

Kemper Kolts Rally Defeats Toledo Broncho Busters

The Kemper Kolts defeated Toledo in a lively Sunday game with strong pitching by Jones and Lawless. Jones struck out 14 and kept Toledo hitters at bay while Buchholtz and Ryan sparked Defiance with key runs and errors by Toledo.

Summer trip and local visitors headlined in brief notices

Frank Rakestraw Harry Shel ly and Guy Kirtley left Monday for Wawausee Ind where they will camp for a couple of weeks. The Misses Margaret Anna Alice and Tom Powers of Paulding and Dr Z Beaman of Ft Wayne were guests at the Blanchard home on Wayne street Sunday. Prof Canfield led the summer school of music at Ohio University and will conduct it next year. R W Mitchell left for visits at Troy and Asheville NC where he was elected to a principal ship in the public schools. His son Stanley also left Saturday and the family except him preceded him to Ashville.
