Bell Seeks $298 Million Annual Increase From Southwestern Bell
Southwestern Bell Telephone Co filed with the Public Utility Commission a combined request for higher rates in Texas to generate $298.3 million in additional annual net revenues and savings. The plan includes higher local rates in 488 cities, intrastate long distance increases, higher coin and connection charges, and a uniform directory assistance fee. Doyle Rogers said rate relief is needed to fund growing demand and service quality, noting intrastate wages rose sharply from 236.2 million in 1971 to 442.9 million last year.
