Good Crops Depend On Fertile Soils And Proper Fertilizers
A Wisconsin Agricultural College Bulletin notes that crops remove fertility from soil including clover and alfalfa. Fixed nitrogen from legumes is returned only partly via manure, about 60 percent. Phosphorus largely cannot be replenished by crops and manure, with about 20 percent loss in the cycle. Little potassium loss occurs with good manure use. Feeding legumes can raise soil nitrogen, but phosphorus must be replaced with fertilizer or bran or cottonseed meal. A fifty bushel corn, thirty bushel oats, and two ton clover crop remove about 27 pounds of phosphorus in three years. ten tons of manure return around 200 pounds. To maintain fertility, track gains and losses. a fertile soil relies on humus and available plant nutrients.
