The state law librarian A J Small compiled 1910 1912 and 1914 county costs for primaries and elections. Counties vary widely with Polk county reporting the highest total over 13 000 in 1914 and Hancock the lowest at 1255 30. Organization of an American Norwegian chamber of commerce to promote Norway United States trade was completed at St Paul with a board of directors elected. Executive officers to be chosen in October at the first regular Chicago meeting. Delegates from New York Chicago Minneapolis Seattle St Paul and other cities attended the sessions.
Public school boards and other organizations seeking help to form evening industrial classes may obtain aid from K. G. Smith director of engineering extension at Iowa State College. The department offers courses and instructors to assist organization. Classes have already started in Davenport and Muscatine.
Washington notes that war orders have shifted the trade balance in the United States toward prosperity in spots, but a Chamber of Commerce review warns this revival is uneven and not a lasting benefit. It highlights quiet lumber and coal sectors, varied manufacturing, and farmer dependence on European markets, with economist Victor Morawetz warning that a favorable trade balance alone does not guarantee lasting prosperity.
Department of Commerce data for eleven months ending June 1 show total foodstuffs exported at 724 million dollars, up from 445 million last year. Wheat led exports with 249.6 million bushels, valued at 310.9 million, up 239.1 million from the prior period. Oats and flour also rose, with corn exports up 28.5 million and barrels totaling 15.077 million.
