Contributions to the Morgan County Red Cross fund campaign continue with $6691.65 reported early today. Campaign chair Robert McNelly urges all residents to contribute to reach the $13,500 quota as about two hundred volunteers assist statewide drive across Decatur and surrounding areas.
Alvis Briscoe stands unopposed for a full term as Morgan County Tax Collector in the May 4 primary. He fills the unexpired term of Charley Hardwick who resigned from the post.
Thirty three candidates qualified for May primaries in Morgan County with several unopposed. Alvis Briscoe seeks re election as tax collector while incumbents R B Nelson and G W Norwood face no opposition for constable and justice of the peace. Other unopposed include Dutton Massey and Thompson among others. The Morgan County Board of Revenue seat has nine candidates in the third district with Spurgeon Long not seeking re election. Col Charles A Lindbergh spent the night at Maxwell Field Montgomery plans to depart for Eglin Field Florida Public relations said no business details were available Lindbergh declined to comment He arrived at Dannelly Field at 5 05 in an Eastern Airlines plane grounded by weather He was accompanied by Col F F Reed from the Army chief of ordnance office in Washington
Coroner Bev Howell reported a long buried adult skeleton found along the Tennessee riverbank about three miles west of Decatur. The mud preserved bones for likely 15 to 25 years or more and the skull area showed a inch-deep hole.
Ronald Jarett, 18 N. Marion Street, Athens, is hospitalized after a reported robbery and shooting on a night where his car collided with a train. William M. King, wounded with bullets in arm and side, says Jarett demanded his wallet before the shooting. Oliver, owner of Standard Service Station, says King and Jarett were friends and that King reported receiving $37. Sheriff and deputy place the incident around 8:30 P M, with King not in serious condition.
Morgan circuit court opens a two week term with Judge Newton Powell presiding over the second degree murder case of Clifton Long linked to the May 1946 shooting of Johnnie Jones. State is represented by Phillip Shanks and George C. Johnston. defense by Melvin Hutson and Noble Russell. Witnesses include Mrs. Johnnie Jones, Clinton Jones, and Dr. J. P. Dyar.
