Ronald Jarett of Athens faces robbery and attempted murder charges after a motel robbery and shooting of William M. King at a Standard Service station. King was wounded, car crash linked, and Jarett was moved from Decatur General Hospital to Limestone County Jail. State and county investigators pursue the case.
The Morgan County Red Cross drive continues to grow toward the $13,500 goal with total contributions at $8390.30. Campaign chair Bob McNelly says more funds are needed due to higher living costs and expanded work. Flint surpassed its $65 quota, while several districts have not yet submitted their gifts.

William Callahan, 16, told reporters he would return home to face charges for the Feb. 3 murder of his father Travis Callahan, a 47 year old civil engineer, saying his father abused the family and misused his savings. He appeared in Montgomery before Magistrate Henri Schwab and said he wants to go back quickly to get the ordeal over with. The youth, grandson of the late Judge W. W. Callahan of Decatur, wore a flannel shirt and trench coat as he spoke, noting his father’s drinking and abuse.
Clifton Long testified in Morgan circuit court as his second degree murder trial neared completion. The defendant, accused of shooting his uncle Johnnie Jones, relied on witness testimony and noted the fight over an overnight stay. Jones died five minutes after hospital arrival from a leg wound.
Juanita Helms two died in a Beech Grove house fire Tuesday afternoon that destroyed the home. Her mother Mrs. Helms, burned on both arms, tried to reach the child but flames blocked entry. The fire may have started when a stove toppled and kerosene ignited. Services Friday at Bethlehem church at 2 30 P M with burial at Moss Cemetery.
Forty students enrolled as the Tennessee Valley Bible Institute opened last night at Central Baptist church. Extension courses from Howard College offer full college credit. Classes listed include Evangelism with Rev. L W Hart in Athens, homeletics with Rev. L C Radford in Decatur, New Testament with Dr. Jesse Rogers in Decatur, and Old Testament. Two armed highwaymen robbed a Memphis to Nashville Greyhound bus near Arlington Tennessee of 568 dollars from 37 passengers and the driver. Deputies and highway patrol searched for the culprits within an hour but they were not found by early today.

Two lawsuits filed in Cullman Alabama claim Gov. James E. Folsom is the common law husband of Christine Putman Folsom and father of her 22 month old son James Douglas. Folsom rejected the claims as political tactics while in Washington for a congressional hearing.
In Cullman Alabama two suits were filed asking the circuit court to declare Governor James E Folsom the lawful father of a 30 year old red haired woman’s baby boy James Douglas and affirm common law marriage. The child sues through next friend Carter E Putman the woman's brother. Folsom a 39 year old widower and Democratic presidential candidate was en route to Washington when filed.
