Washington June 23 John L Lewis took a recess in renewed contract talks with coal operators to prepare for a policy committee review and report progress to President Truman's fact finding board. The contract expires June 30.
Reports from Moulton describe a wild animal seen west of town with tracks the size of a palm. Farmers near Loosier fear a mountain lion or wolf and plan to shoot on sight after sightings by Grace Thompson and others.
In Sacramento Judge McDonnell sentenced Roy Goodenough, 62, to six months in jail after revoking his license for drunken driving. The judge recalled warning him in April that a life of repeat offenses could lead to a long sentence. Goodenough remained silent before pulling a tooth from his pocket as the verdict was read.
The American British and French Allies rejected a Soviet currency reform for Berlin and announced the deutschemark would be used in the Western sectors. They declared Berlin a two currency city, closed banks and shops except essentials, and ordered a debt moratorium. Demonstrations blocked the city hall as tensions rose in the Cold War capital.
In Miami, William and Mrs. Harvey refused offers of help and money after surrendering their seven children aged nine months to eight years. Three children have been adopted locally, the remaining four to be sent away as the couple plans to leave Miami and change their names. Mrs Harvey, with a heart ailment, said she may never see the children again.
A 12 foot section of wall fixtures toppled at Clements Antique Shop on Church Street injuring Mrs. R. Clements Sr. She was at her Trinity home today with minor cuts and bruises on her face hands and body. Friends say injuries are painful but not critical.
A fire at the Alabama Brick and Tile Company Tuesday at 5 P M caused a slight loss with flames confined to a dry kiln and extinguished by city firemen. Earlier that day at 2 30 P M firemen halted a blaze at the Hamil clinic when trash ignited. no losses were listed.

In Tel Aviv clashes erupted after two Israeli ministers resigned amid the crisis between the army and Irgun Zvai Leumi. A funeral procession for men killed in yesterday’s beach battle grew disorderly as Israeli forces foiled a plan by Irgun to land a 600 ton munitions cargo from an LST, followed by mortar fire against the ship.
Israeli mortar fire blasted a beached munitions ship held by Irgun Zvai Leumi rebels last night sparking a four hour battle with the army. The LST carried 600 tons of arms in violation of the UN truce and flames and smoke enveloped the waterfront as thousands fled.
Four people including James Martin Thomas Mary Geneva Hartselle Grady Hays and Lucile Hays were arrested on grand larceny charges for allegedly stealing property valued at 100 from Robert L Lakey. The group tied to the fatal shooting of Thomas F Woodruff Jr faces related conspiracy and concealment counts as coroner rules justifiable homicide.
Senator Sparkman says harmony on civil rights at the Democratic National Convention is possible. Representative Rankin notes hope for adopting the 1944 plank, which demands equal rights and protections, while promising discussions with President Truman on other issues. Rankin and Sparkman cite accord on TVA and rural electrification.
The Republican convention in Philadelphia unanimously adopted a 1948 platform urging world peace cooperation and anti-Communism.
