Partly cloudy outlook with scattered thundershowers and moderate southerly winds. Local market reports show middling and strict low prices while residents travel between Decatur and nearby towns. Community happenings include church tent meetings, club notices, hospital updates, and staff movements in Morgan County.
City Council passed a resolution to annex a 12 acre area south of Decatur along Somerville Road, known as Mortgage Hill, after receipt of a petition from local property owners. An election will be called within 20 to 40 days once certified. a committee was named to work with Crescent Amusement on a permanent amusement tax schedule amid a related court decision.
National Guard armories in Decatur Hartselle and Athens are open to enlistments for men 19 to 25 who may avoid the draft by joining the Guard before President Truman signs the draft bill. Guard service includes 48 weekly two hour training periods and 15 days summer field training, with 150 to 200 vacancies in each unit.
A massive explosion at the Hercules Powder Co. plant in Pinole California obliterated a nitrogen glycerin unit, killing two workers. The blast, felt up to twenty miles away, occurred at 2 43 P M PDT. Earlier in Kenvil New Jersey three were killed and six injured in a separate series of three explosions. A company spokesman called the events a coincidence.
Alabama Attorney General Albert A. Carmichael says the corrupt practices law applies to runoffs as well as the first primary. The advisory opinion followed a request from Madison County Probate Judge Thomas W. Jones who cited a county commission candidate who failed to file campaign expense accounting before the June 1 runoff. Carmichael affirmed that a candidate’s name must not appear on the general election ballot if expenses are not accounted for before and after the primary. Judge Jones did not name the candidate.
Greek army troops press a large operation against 7000 guerrillas in the Mourit Grammos zone cutting off an escape route into Albania. The 2nd 8th and 10th divisions push from Grevena Ioannia and South West while 1st and 15th fight near Nestorion as heavy combat intensifies.
Montgomery June 22 A committee charged with investigating the State Highway Department was called into session today by Chairman W M Beck of Fort Payne speaker of the House. Beck said the first meeting would be mainly organization and policy discussion. The grand jury last seat criticized the Highway Department for “gross inefficiency” and irregular deals with contractors. Members include Guy Hardwick Robin Swift Ed N Rodgers and Chris Sherlock with Dodgers and Sherlock as highway directors. A newspaperman would be nearby for the first meeting at 1 30 PM as the committee weighs its agenda.
Justice T A Goldsborough approved a $100 monthly pension plan for UMW miners age 62 with 20 years service. Ezra Van Horn sought to block payments but the court found the plan reasonable and not a violation of the 1947 coal contract or Taft Hartley act. The fund is built from a 10 cent per ton coal royalty and $5 million was set aside to begin payments.
A 33 year old man, James D. Peck of New York City, chained himself to a bannister in the White House during visiting hours to protest the draft, with "veto the draft" painted on his shirt. Secret service released him for questioning and he likely will face no charges. He had recently been released from Danbury federal penitentiary after a three year term.
A coroner jury ruled the death of Thomas F. Woodruff Jr a lawful homicide. Robert L Lokey fired the fatal shot during an early Sunday incident near Highway 31 in a tent where chalk novelties are sold. Several people were jailed including Grady Hays and Mary Hartselle with James Thomas Jr. present for statements.
Jimmie Williams was re elected to a second term as post commander of Morgan County American Legion Post 15 at the regular meeting held at the post home on Bank Street. Officers elected to serve with him include Jimmie Bloodworth as first vice commander Billy Hine as second vice commander Joe Ragsdale as third vice commander T D Brooks as adjutant Leo Wright as finance officer Rev John Troxler as chaplain G L Ford as sergeant at arms and trustees Bill Evans and Bill Sittason.
Robert Woodard and Horace Pope, convicted of killing taxi driver Wallace Dean in July 1946, were each granted a $5000 bond and released from Cullman jail at 3 P M Monday. The Alabama Supreme Court reversed life sentences last week after testimony showed the state's chief witness admitted giving false testimony at the prior trial.
William Paul Lentz 25 died at 8 00 AM on his birthday after a 6 10 PM Monday crash on Highway 31 south of Hartselle. Two others were seriously hurt including seven year old Fred Lang Jr in Cullman. Edward Malchow 30 of Cullman was hospitalized in Decatur Gen. The truck struck the Village Creek bridge end, damaging the vehicle and bridge. Coroner Bev Howell assists in the probe as authorities continue the investigation.
The Republican platform, 1948 edition, pledges internationalism and a strong military, with civil rights, housing, Israel, prices, and anti-communist measures. Henry Cabot Lodge will present the 2400 word document to the convention, aiming to attract votes and unify nominees.
The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the Taft Hartley law does not bar union or corporate funded publications from taking sides in political campaigns. The decision avoids a constitutional ruling for now since CIO News endorsed a congressional candidate, leaving guidance on limits before the November elections.

In Tel Aviv and Natanya a clash between Irgun Zvai Leumi and Israeli forces erupted over landing an arms ship. The LST grounded near Tel Aviv bay after a nighttime move, as a muffled explosion and smoke marked the disputed arrival despite a UN four week armistice.
In Philadelphia on June 22, Senator Edward Martin withdrew in favor of Thomas E. Dewey at the Republican National Convention. Martin announced he would place Dewey's name in nomination for delegates to consider tomorrow. The Dresden-like scene began with the Nebraska delegation leading a demonstration as sessions continued into the afternoon.
In Philadelphia on June 22, Roy Foster backers failed to secure a credentials committee member to move for reconsideration of their contested Georgia delegation. The Tucker-led group favored Dewey for the nomination while Foster supporters backed Taft. The credentials committee adjourned with Foster saying he will not pursue a fight at the convention.
