Partly cloudy this afternoon tonight and Saturday with scattered daytime thundershowers and gentle to moderate southerly winds on the coast. The cotton market fell 25 points at noon with mid dling at 36.75 and strict low 35.75 at Decatur. A white youth and a white girl were jailed in Morgan County on separate charges, bond set at 300 dollars.
President Truman accepted an invitation to visit Brazil soon. Brazilian Ambassador Carlos Martins announced the acceptance after a White House meeting. The invitation includes Mrs. Truman and their daughter Margaret. no exact date was fixed.
Gen Omar Bradley warns that turning away from world engagement risks disaster and that the United States could be a target in future conflicts. He says there is no free ride for veterans and urges opposition to extra benefits and privileges.
Rep. Hendricks of Florida demands a full investigation into the selection of Tallahassee for a veterans hospital and the closure of a former Army hospital in Thomasville Georgia. He says House appropriations rules require vetting before funds can be spent there, while Senator Holland seeks to remove the restriction.
Rutledge S. Thomas president of the Decatur City Council will leave Sunday for Montgomery to attend a two day statewide meeting of the Alabama League of Municipalities. Representatives from every municipality will discuss pending legislation with officials including House Speaker Beck Senate President Henderson and Lt Governor Clarence. Congressman Albert Rains from Washington will attend to discuss legislation in Congress.
Greenville South Carolina resident B C Watkins shows the Watkins Special in Decatur built by hand over two years using Ford parts and a 95 hp Ford engine. The chassis is a 1935 model with a front driver seat and engine behind. Watkins completed the car May 17 and plans a second car with the motor on the back wheels to remove the chassis.
Five operating unions representing about 350 000 workers renew demands for 44 working rule changes fueling the rail cost surge. Non operating unions seek 20 cent an hour raises for about one million employees as carrier talks continue.
The body of Cpl. L. A. Carpenter who died after an automobile accident in Leadville Colorado will arrive in Decatur at 5 10 am Saturday. He will be taken to the home of his parents Mr and Mrs Jessie E Carpenter of Austinville where it will lie in state until funeral services are announced by Mutual Service.
The market opened at 1.98 per bushel and quickly moved above 2.00, reaching 2.00 within an hour. The prior high for this corn future was 1.86 set on July 10, 1919, in this market segment.
The Decatur Seaplane Base the first and only seaplane base in Alabama was approved today with a permit to James C. McAllister of Decatur by the Alabama aeronautics department. Asa Rountree Jr. director and E. S. Page Athens will be associated in base operations. McAllister plans commercial flights charter service sight seeing instruction and plane sales. The base will act as a sales agent for the Republic Seabee. A floating dock and office are at Cisco Harber built site and permits followed approval from Decatur city council the TVA and the War Department.
William M. Shaw a Negro bus driver traveling from South Carolina to Mississippi was arrested by Highway Patrolmen Hale and Vinson for leaving the scene of an accident near Florence. He was brought to Morgan county jail and fined $100 plus costs after a hearing before Justice George W Norwood. The $25 damage to the other car was paid.
Baseball Commissioner A B Chandler led a group of dignitaries to Birmingham for Alabama's first statewide East West high school baseball game. Among attendees were George Trautman Bill Veeck Charlie Hurth Frank Lane and Gov. James E Folsom was slated to watch. Harry Johnson will serve as umpire in chief.
The Paris cabinet agreed on a tight save-the-franc tax program to balance the budget as strikes hit the economy. The revenue bill would add about 140 billion francs to 1947 revenues and goes to the national assembly for approval.
In Montgomery on June 20 the Alabama Senate defeated Rep. Roberts H. Brown’s nomination to Auburn board of trustees after an 18 to 15 adjournment vote. Proponents sought reconsideration but a filibuster prevented action before the deadline. Rumors linger Gov. Folsom may re-nominate Brown for another showdown. The liquor referendum and a horse racing bill also moved through the corridor with debates and committee actions pending.
A nationwide dragnet pursued Fred W. Lundy 65 for questioning in the slayings of Emily Griffith 65 the Denver educator and her sister Florence 67. The two were found shot in their Pinecliffe cabin after Lundy aided them, then fled. Police reconstruct events and note a $350 bill and a farewell note in Lundy's car.
P W E Dyar of Guin, 62, an elementary school principal and Marion county veteran of 42 years in education, was sworn into the Alabama House of Representatives. He succeeds R R Wright, who resigned to become probate judge. Dyar, Jacksonville State Teachers College graduate, has led Guin elementary for 25 years and has seven sons and four daughters. House Speaker Beck administered the oath.
Greece formally guarantees the United States a free hand in supervising the 300 million dollar aid program and agrees to full publicity on its use. The agreement, signed by Ann Lincoln MacVeach for the U S and Foreign Minister Constantine Tsaldaris for Greece, commits Greece to broad reforms in economy finance industry and government. It allows continued American aid until future arrangements and provides for UN oversight and potential halting of assistance if reforms stall.
Montgomery report shows 51,357 active job applicants in May, up 402 from April. Leading offices include Birmingham with 7,374 and Mobile, Anniston, Huntsville, Decatur, and Ensley among others, while 16,642 job openings were posted in May.
In London Bevin urges speedy Europe recovery talks and warns against procedural delays after Moscow talks failed. He notes Britain and France likely proceed with Marshall plan proposals, with or without Soviet participation, as Soviet diplomat leaves for Moscow to discuss the plan. He criticizes one party regimes in Eastern Europe and calls for decisive action on food coal transport and housing.
William A. Davis, 27, a Clarendon county Black man convicted of raping a Sumter woman on April 15, died in the electric chair at the state penitentiary in Columbia after entering the chamber calm and asking for a song. The condemned man spoke of forgiveness for his race and asked for a final sung verse.
Senate leaders near agreement on a vote tomorrow after the House overridden President Truman's Taft Hartley veto 331 to 83. The White House mobilized Democrats to shore up Senate support while 106 Democrats joined 225 Republicans to sustain the veto.
Washington report notes Alabama lawmakers vote on the roll call to override President Truman's veto of the labor management bill.
