Trustees of the Joe Wheeler Electric Membership Corporation approved a $336,239.64 contract with John H. Bethune for 281 miles of rural lines in Morgan and Lawrence counties. REA approval is anticipated, with additional funds sought to complete the extension as crews prepare to begin construction.
Eva Fortner Mason 34, divorcee, is jailed on murder charges for stabbing her 57 year old mother of ten, Elmer Goolsby, in their Birmingham home. Mason confessed to detectives that she grabbed a paring knife after an argument and struck Goolsby, who died after hospital admission.
Mayor Sumner announced Joe Elliot will head the street and sanitary departments in Decatur. The sanitary appointment is temporary due to Jim Pettey’s illness with sciatica. Elliot plans to visit every home in Decatur twice weekly.
Prime Minister Attlee denounces totalitarian trends in Eastern Europe and defends Britain's role in rebuilding European prosperity. He says right to oppose government, ballot freedom, and democratic choice must be protected, guiding Britain's foreign policy amid Kremlin decisions on the Marshall Plan. Willie Griffin Pruett and Sam E. Pruett filed two damage suits totaling 30000 dollars in Morgan County circuit court against Harry Lowther and Robert B. partners doing business as Southern Distributing Co. The first suit seeks 25000 dollars for Willie Griffin Pruett, wife of Dr. Sam E. The second seeks 5000 dollars for injuries to his wife and damage to his car. Norman W. Morgan county Post 15 American Legion will elect new officers at the annual meeting Monday at eight in the Legion home on Bank Street. The post has 881 eligible voters with three candidates for post commander Jimmy Williams Fred Robinson and Butler P A Hine. Other offices will also be filled.
House Armed Services members say drive to cash GI terminal leave bonds will sidetrack universal military training legislation until next year. Three hearings have been held with more than 30 bills to redeem bonds set to start next week, likely delaying universal training for the session.
Norman Malone an 18 year old of South Limestone was charged after an alleged break in at the Sandlin home Friday night. Officers say he admitted breaking in while claiming he was drunk and seeking food. Miss Ruby Sandlin awakened by a noise saw a man on hands and knees before he fled. The entry was reportedly through a first floor window into the Sandlin residence in Limestone County. Malone is jailed in Athens without bond awaiting charges filed by James F. Sandlin before Judge D L Rosenau. The report notes the Sandlin home has been in the family 25 years and Miss Sandlin was sleeping in the dining room area when awakened. Undersecretary of State William Clayton travels to Europe amid British French efforts to win Soviet cooperation on a European recovery plan. He will advocate a program with minimum U.S. funding and emphasize self help through an organization of Europe, reportedly signaling that the Soviet government is interested in the plan.
