Rains Aid Fire Fight Against Newfoundland Blazes
Rain helped Newfoundland firefighters during the weekend as crews stalled a blaze within four miles of Grand Falls home of the Anglo Newfoundland Development Company. A second wall of flame halted less than three miles from Lewisporte where two million gallons of gasoline for Gander airport are stored. Fire hose lines manned main streets at Grand Falls while volunteers built a water reserve at Windsor. Mill workers brought under control a flare near the paper mill. 200 workers aided. Coast guard vessel Springdale stood by to evacuate 1500 residents of Lewisporte if needed. Preliminary estimates put about 1 ½ square miles burned at Grand Falls and 14 square miles at Lewisporte.
