Special called VFW Post 4190 meeting tonight at 7 45 at the club rooms on Second Avenue in connection with ticket sales for the musical revue Town Scandals all members urged to attend.
Two blasts from a welder's torch at the F. B. Walker & Son shipyard on Singing River killed 32 year old Jake Pharr and burned shipyard owner John Walker and inspector H. W. Wyatt of Mobile. The yard builds and repairs barges and river boats.
Democratic leaders predicted swift House passage of a local option rent control bill after the Senate approved a compromise extending controls for about 8 million dwellings. The plan would let communities vote to end ceilings by Dec 31, with automatic sunset if no vote occurs.
William Marvin Baggett 54 owner and manager of Decatur Glass Co. died after falling ten feet from an extension ladder while glass work on the State National Bank in Tuscumbia. He lived at 1502 Fourteenth Avenue East in Decatur and would have turned 55 today. Funeral set for Wednesday at 10 A. M. at South Side Baptist Church with Rev. J. W. Johnson officiating. Interment Whitehouse Cemetery in Whitehouse Tennessee. Surviving are a widow two daughters two sons two sisters six grandchildren and other relatives. Pallbearers named Ralph Poole Sam Clendenon J C Howell Melvin Oliver E V Ferguson and E L Ashford.
Herman Eubanks thirty of Somerville was released on a $750 appearance bond after waiving a preliminary hearing on an assault with intent to murder charge. He claimed Lynn attacked him at a party and he fired in self defense. Lynn was shot three times and hospitalized in Nashville after transfer from the veterans hospital.
A Decatur resident Albert S Justice was mistaken for a dead man identified in Texas authorities records. The real deceased also carried the Justice surname, but the two individuals are not related to the North Alabama family. Police efforts confirmed the error and traced the true identity.
Circuit Judge Newton B. Powell will charge the jury after lunch in the civil case of Jimmy Henry Willingham vs Eve Rett B. Watts and others. Willingham seeks 2500 in damages. Plaintiff's Sherman Powell and defense Eyster and Eyster appeared as the civil docket moved forward with several continuances and settlements noted, including dismissals and a default judgment in related actions.
Dr. Frank M. Chenault was re elected chairman of the Morgan County chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis at the annual meeting held at Central Baptist church. W. H. Lovelady L. R. Murphree and A. T. Hanson were re elected in key officers. The group discussed a possible polio epidemic and reported over $7 000 on hand. Dobson was guest speaker, the only man in the state devoting full time to this work.

Linden Alabama June 13 Bob Jones 16 died in a Selma hospital after a hit and run near Linden Sunday night. He stood beside a parked car with a friend when a passing car sideswiped the parked auto and struck him. Funeral services will be held here tomorrow afternoon. He is survived by his parents Mr and Mrs J K Jones and two sisters.
Danville Illinois Rotary Club members discuss for a luncheon topic the best location for a new Danville City Hall and the occupation of Berlin. The discussion reflects diverse interests among attendees.
Air France reports most passengers missing after a C 54 Sky Master ditched in the Persian Gulf near Bahrein island. Only six of 51 aboard survived including four men, a radio operator, and chief pilot Jean Fladek who was seriously injured. Bodies of four men and two women recovered. 39 remain missing, including one infant. Flight was Karachi to Cairo when forced down.
W Dinsmore and Dr William Geaked report to the Jackson county board of revenue that the county will contribute 12 500 toward the District I Sanatorium building. Jackson had pledged that amount but made no payments. Bids for construction are under consideration by federal authorities.
Montgomery June 13 Girls staters explored local government mechanics with Ed Reid of the Alabama League of Municipalities and heard an Americanism address by Rev. Claude Haygood. A mock session illustrated local self rule as candidates for governor and other offices were named.
The Daily apologizes for misidentifying Mrs Evie Freeman in a building permit notice. The error referred to her as a negro and the paper seeks pardon from Mrs Freeman and her family. Mrs Freeman is a valued employee of Goodyear Decatur Mills.
Lizzie Cottingham of Wheeler is released on a 500 appearance bond after a June 4 shooting at a truck in Moulton that left Clarence Loozier with a pellet near the brain base. Loozier treated at Colbert County Hospital and later released. Cottingham arrested at Courtland by Chief W L Terry.
Spencer Latham aged 43 is jailed in Morgan county on a $750 appearance bond on a forgery warrant. An affidavit sworn before County Judge W H Long states Latham forged the Bankers Life and Casualty Company on a $59.85 check to injure or defraud. Deputies Garland Nuby and James Barnes, with Sheriff C B Humphrey, arrested him.
Sheriff said W. R. Chavis of Uriah Alabama was struck by a bull while working on a new highway about 15 miles west of Greenville. A coroner's jury ruled the accident unavoidable. The address for Chavis was not available.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 16 at 9 a m before Probate Judge Isaac Johnson for Ed Mack Owen 36 year old Moulton Crossing restaurant and filling station operator. Owen is held in Morgan county jail in connection with the fatal shooting of Grady Bert Terry 20 who died from a 45 caliber bullet wound outside Owens place of business following a Sunday night dancing party. An 18 year old Decatur girl Ann Wright is under bond as a material witness. Russell W Lynne Decatur attorney has been engaged to defend Owen.
The United States granted Vladimir Houdek, former Czech representative to the United Nations, permission to remain here. Authorities cited risk to his life if returned to Czechoslovakia though Houdek has not renounced communism. The case differs from other Soviet satellite diplomats who sought asylum.
Twenty Republican senators urged a Senate Judiciary Committee investigation into the Justice Department’s handling of the Amerasia case. Senator Capehart introduced a resolution for inquiry, amid talk of a “cover up” and contempt proceedings for witnesses who refused to answer questions. Jaffe, editor of Amerasia, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to obtain government documents and was fined $2,500.
The Decatur school board officially renames two buildings for fall terms. Riverside Elementary becomes Riverside and will house through sixth grade students on Lafayette Street. The junior high becomes Gordon-Bibb as students from Dan and Bibb move there. Both buildings receive extensive repairs to equipment plumbing and painting.
