Local items include visits, hospital news, a fire at 1018 Tower Avenue, school plans, a prison sentence, permits, a TV cruise, and a skating rink stabbing incident. see page 2 for diary.
In Montgomery on June 12 Gov. James E. Folsom demands a top priority for his three measures in the upcoming special session. He seeks a 67 senator reapportionment bill, a constitutional convention, and local bills before leaving office. Education leaders may push for a 6 percent cut in school funding, but Folsom signals opposition until the main agenda advances. The plan risks immediate adjournment unless local bills are handled, with a possible workaround requiring a Monday session, a long recess for local bill advertising, then resuming the session to pass them.
Summer school opened this morning offering Senior one B English, senior two social problems, American history A and B, algebra one and two. In junior high, Junior one B English, junior three B English, junior one B math, 72 B, junior two math A, junior three math A and B, junior two B history, junior three B civics, and junior three B science. Elementary classes run through Wednesday.
Senators pressed for details in the Amerasia affair as Philip Jaffe testified in a closed session. Jaffe, editor of Amerasia magazine, faced conspiracy charges after confidential papers were found at the New York office. Four others faced varied outcomes, with questions raised about evidence and legal process.
Mrs Angela Miceli 46 sued her uncle for divorce in common pleas court. Judge Frank J Merrick commented it will take more than one Solomon to unravel this one. Miceli testified she believes the marriage was not legal, so no divorce or separation could be granted.
A 30 year old Somerville man Herman Eubanks is jailed on an assault with intent to murder charge after shooting Thaddeus Lynn during a dispute at the Balch home. Lynn suffered three bullet wounds and pellets from a .32 pistol. condition critical. He was moved to a Nashville veterans hospital after treatment in Decatur General. Deputies Nuby and Barnes scheduled the investigation of the 10 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday incident.
A 14 year old boy, David Lane Jr., was injured when struck by a 1942 Chevrolet coupe driven by Charles Evans near Ardmore on a Sunday afternoon five miles east of Athens. A separate five vehicle crash near Athens on Highway 31 caused no injuries with estimated damage of about 200 dollars to a 39 Ford and 125 dollars to two other vehicles.
Alabama Industry Days will be observed in Decatur and across the state next Thursday to Saturday. The first statewide public recognition of industrial progress features exhibits and rallies in more than 125 cities, with plants open for public inspection and local groups sponsoring celebrations.
Status quo remains in the Athens strike as 21 electrical workers press for union bargaining recognition by the City of Athens. The city refuses to recognize the union, calling the ruling outdated, while union leaders insist it is not valid. Mayor Elmer Vinson reported talks with union head Charles Goidel, who warned of pressure and described the standoff as a war of nerves. The city was told workers would handle power emergencies at the peer waterworks.
Early 1950 census figures for 35 of Alabama’s 67 counties indicate a substantial population gain over 1940, with gains centered in urban areas such as Birmingham Mobile and Montgomery. If these advances hold, Alabama likely keeps its nine U.S. representatives.
VFW Post 4199 announces the musical extravaganza Town Scandals will be staged at the Somerville Road school auditorium instead of Riverside auditorium. The two day run begins Thursday night June 15 at 8 00 with tickets valid for both evenings. repairs at the high school prompted the location change.

Two traffic crashes injure two people and cause heavy vehicle damage in separate incidents. William F. Ellis of Atlanta was knocked out at Sixth Avenue and East Moulton Street around 9:33 p.m., with Barba Rylant Hartseller suffering nose injuries. A second crash at Gordon Drive and Fourth Avenue East involved a 1948 Chevrolet and a GMC truck, causing light damage. Investigating officers were Louis Landers and Richard Hyde.
Pancho Camacho, who claims to be 128, told a census taker he would like to live a few more years. He lives in a hut on the Champion Ranch near the Rio Grande, having crossed from Mexico as a child and endured a hard life on ranches and with family. He has hosted three press conferences since the census visit and still eats well with his full natural teeth.
The Morgan Board of Revenue and Control must pay $1,686 for four parcels along the Arab Decatur right of way after a condemnation damages report by commissioners H F Holmes O M Light and M E Dinsmore. Probate Judge T C Almon appointed the survey team. Hearings continue with the fifth parcel set for June 30 and May 24 postponed for service.

Washington June 12 The senate voted 40 to 25 to not shelve the rent control bill a test of sentiment as federal controls due to expire June 30. Senator Wherry moved to return the bill to the banking committee, signaling possible defeat. Senator Cain pledged further filibuster threats if needed to block or delay passage. Democrats seek extension with some Republican aid to cover six months plus local option.
Ernest Williams, a Black man, was fined $100 in Recorder’s Court for shooting during a Friday night dance at a Negro high school. An affidavit charges him with assault with intent to murder Hosie Lee Russell whom Williams says he shot at four times over a whiskey dispute. Roberta Ellison, Willie Walton, and A. J. Jones were wounded in the incident.
Police in Ris town Tenn assisted CIO pickets at a textile plant as the one week strike entered a quiet phase. Scattered tacks found on the road leading to the plant prompted the patrols but no injuries were reported.
