Senator Lucas and Rep Dingell push mixed proposals including an excess profits tax option and higher personal exemptions. Maj. Gen. Bennett E. Meyers pleaded not guilty in federal court to six charges three perjury counts and three counts that he induced a witness to lie to the senate war investigation committee. Lamarre, Meyers ally, pleaded guilty to three perjury counts with sentencing deferred.
Deputy collectors of Internal Revenue will be in Room 200 of the post office building on Bank Street on specific days to help taxpayers prepare or amend their tax reports.
The New York state ALP executive committee endorsed Henry A. Wallace for President, triggering a party split as leaders from the Amalgamated Clothing Workers and the United Automobile Workers CIO walked out and resigned from posts amid the closed meeting. The ALP operates only in New York and previously backed Roosevelt.
Unofficial returns from Morgan county show 1,821 yes to 1,541 no with 48 of 57 boxes reporting. Decatur and Hartselle favored the amendment while Limestone and Cullman counties voted against it. Lawrence showed a mixed early result and rural boxes weighed heavily against the measure.
A Morgan County unit of the Young Democrats of Alabama will be reorganized. A meeting is set for Tuesday at 7 30 p m in the American Legion home assembly room. Members ages 19 to 40 are invited. Jim Smith of Lexington leads the state group and David Cochran of Mobile is treasurer. The unit aims to support the Democratic Party amid the upcoming presidential campaign.

In Montgomery Alabama Gov James Folsom wins after a hard vote on the self starter amendment. The famous hat was worn by Folsom during his first primary run and has moved between supporters as the results came in. Lyerly Folsom aide, dusted it off for the victory and will store it again until the next election.
The Decatur Junior Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the Barter Theatre of Virginia in Decatur on Tuesday night January 13 with a performance of The Importance Of Being Earnest at Riverside auditorium. Frank Y. Savage spoke as Barter troupe representative and J O Colvard attended as a guest.
A Coastal Airlines DC-3 charter crash near Savannah Georgia killed fifteen people and injured nine. All passengers were Puerto Ricans en route home. The aircraft originated in Newark and flew via Philadelphia and Raleigh before the crash in marshland near Wilmington Island. Pilot and co pilot were among the dead.
Gov. James E. Folsom drew a strong win as Alabama voters rejected a proposal to let the legislature call itself into a special session. Unofficial returns show 58,141 for and 86,143 against, with rural counties driving the defeat. Folsom vows to push his program of old age pensions and rural roads. Senator James B. Allen Jr. said the people rejected the self starter amendment and will abide by the result.
Senators Taft and George said a long session to approve a European recovery plan will likely begin July 1, three months after the administration’s target. Ball disputed an April 1 deadline, urging that aid can stretch past June, with possible interim stopgap funding.
Hugo Wright, 27, is jailed in Morgan county on charges of grand larceny and breaking and entering. He allegedly stole from an inhabited dwelling owned by Jesse A. West and took a 3 4 horsepower motor and a table valued at 118 dollars.
