Generally fair and continued cold through Wednesday with frost tonight in the south. Decatur cotton market quotes middling at 35.75 and strict low at 34.75. Reports of visitors, church meetings, hospital transfers, and community events across Decatur including VFW activities and March of Dimes fund efforts.
Washington January 6 congress opens amid a calm before disputes to come as President Truman prepares to deliver the State of the Union at 1 30 pm EST tomorrow. Republicans and Democrats eye tax cuts foreign policy and military powers while vacancies and deaths shuffle the House and Senate scenes.
A Decatur parking meter test suit may begin with a hearing in Judge Newton Powell's office Saturday at 10 am. Defendants Paul Robinson Charles H. Eyster and D E Frederick are involved. Witnesses include a Duncan Meter Corporation representative as exhibits will include two meters.
The Decatur area faces a real fuel shortage with dealers not taking new accounts and limited allocations lasting ten months. Officials warn spring tractor operations may be affected. public cooperation to order a day ahead and conserve fuel is urged. Oil demand surpasses wartime levels, with more home heating units and higher usage per burner. A prediction suggests four to five years to rebalance supply amid bottlenecks in steel, pipelines, refinery equipment, and tank cars. See FUEL on Page 2.
In Jerusalem fighting continued between 1,500 beleaguered Jews and Arab riflemen with dawn raids by Hagana forces on outskirts faltering. Casualties unknown but suspected light. a nine year old Arab boy and a British constable were killed. Rescue teams pulled a 28-year-old Arab woman from Semiramis hotel rubble after 30 hours buried.
Four gum chewing Atlanta youths from prominent families were charged with vandalism and malicious mischief after confessing to wrecking at least 19 automobiles. Danny Payne, Leonard Haas Jr, Evans, and Harold were booked with multiple counts. Payne faces additional larceny charges.
Six year old Jimmy Warren is in the Hamilton clinic with severe bruises and a broken left leg after being struck by a car at the corner of Church and Bank Streets. Jimmy Williams admitted hitting the car and is held on $800 bond. The accident occurred as Warren attempted to cross Church Street while Williams drove east on Church.
Boy and Girl Scouts led by Frank Yaney and Mrs. Erskine Chenault will aid the March of Dimes drive in Morgan County. Scouts will place coin boxes in local stores and businesses Saturday morning after 10 o clock. A campaign meeting with Eyster and Yancy is set for 10 a m at the First Federal Savings and Loan Association building. Girl Scouts will prepare materials for mailing next week. Eyster urged voluntary contributions and said plans distribute boxes countywide to reach a 10 cent per resident goal.
Dr Robert Dane Cook former Memorial Drive Methodist pastor now at First Methodist in Tuscumbia introduces his first poetry collection Cabin Lore. He also has two forthcoming works Glimpses Of Beauty and Tales From The Tennessee noting humor realism and rugged themes drawn from Alabama hills and country life.
Premier Themistokles Sophoulis announced with US consent Greece will raise army strength from 120 000 to 132 000 and boost national guard to 50 000. Britain authorized to transfer lend lease equipment, observers to be placed on the Balkan frontiers, and Greece seeks machine guns and mountain artillery.
Funeral services for Marianne Grubbs Summer are set for Wednesday at 3 30 p m at Central Baptist Church with Rev Paul Roberts and Rev Paul B Wegmueller officiating A funeral cortege will leave Brown's Funeral Company at 3 15 Burial is planned in City Cemetery with Brown's directing City and county officials will serve as honorary pallbearers and the list of pallbearers includes Joe Porter Joe Elmer Loyd and Johnny Aycock Stores close at 3 p m tomorrow in memoriam notices for the city event.
Montgomery and nearby counties report very low turnout in the one day special election for the self starter and other constitutional amendments. In Cloverdale three boxes logged 159 votes by 9 A M, statewide first hour totals reached 339 ballots across 15 boxes, with absentee results showing modest support for the amendments in Dothan Mobile and Selma precincts.
Washington January 6 Proposals to set up standby meat rationing machinery win endorsement from Senators Ives and Mont. Cabinet food committee to drop eggless Thursdays after this week but continue meatless Tuesdays as egg supply rises. Meat shortage forecast for spring. Senator Flanders to introduce legislation authorizing meat rationing plans pending another act of Congress. Ives commits to action.
The Decatur high school band will play at the opening session of the Alabama Education Association in Birmingham on March 25. Walter Jackson, city superintendent, announced the invitation and said the band will perform a seven minute program in the municipal auditorium, with Carl Schwachow as director. This marks the first time the Decatur band has played for a general AEA session attended by about 6,000 teachers.
The New York Daily News described a former British seaman Alistair Nicholson as coerced into the U S Army in England, jailed and then receiving 2500 in benefits under an American GI guise. Nicholson, a Glasgow native, was deported in 1946 and later shipped home as a GI after U S authorities in England deemed him a deserter. Army spokesmen had no comment.
First absentee returns favored the self starter constitutional amendment with 11 to 4 in Mobile and 28 to 11 in Houston County. Morgan County reported 45 to 5 in support as Bluff Dallas counted 5 to 4. Counts were unofficial and incomplete before polls closed. Governor Folsom accused lawmakers of hogtying state interests amid a vigorous campaign.
The Daily hosts its usual election party this evening with AP wire delivering state tallies as fast as possible. Morgan county returning officers should call The Daily collect when their count finishes. Polls close at six in cities. trends will be unclear until then. Senator James B. Allen leads a push for a program including a 45 monthly old age pension and a 40 million rural road project. Proponents accuse the Governor of half truths and misleading statements while targeting his personal conduct. Supporters include Senator J Bruce Henderson and Senator Albert Boutwell who denounced the Governor with sharp accusations in the Alabama political debate.
General MacArthur's HQ plans to use the occupation trust fund to borrow 10 million dollars to buy 50,000 bales of cotton. Purchases will come from the United States and existing stocks, with shipments from India, to keep Japanese mills operating in spring.
