Partly cloudy Sunday with mild temperatures and south to southwest winds along the coast. The day reached 78 degrees with a high of 60 at night. Several residents return travel plans include Mrs. Fred C. Whatley of McRae and her sister visiting Decatur and Atlanta before returning home. Two fires were reported, one grass fire near Somerville Road near the Country Club with no damage, and a curtain fire at 301 Bank Street with minimal loss. Local residents mentioned: Douglas Ann Thrasher and Lester Wayne Thrasher ill at home of their parents. Sheriff reports include drunkenness, reckless driving, and an assault case. Police logged arrests for public drunkenness, leaving the scene of an accident, traffic violations, and improper tags. Firemen Keep Busy As Four Fires Break Out
Four fires within an hour kept city fire crews busy on Saturday. At 1:20 p.m. the Stone Lumber Company boiler room on Old Ferry Road burned briefly before extinguishing. Damages were under 150 dollars according to Frank and Bill Stone. A grass fire behind Ryan Tire Service reached the service office wall but caused little damage. A barn at 411 Prospect Drive and grass in Finley’s field on Fourth Street also caught, with minor damage reported.
