The Decatur High School Band will perform tonight at 8 in the school auditorium under director Carl Schwachow. Band Mothers Club sponsors the event. An enchilada supper at Westside Presbyterian Church basement is Saturday 6 to 7 pm with phone orders at 2278-J or 4578. Lillian Meade of the American Cancer Society will visit Decatur Monday to meet the Morgan County Education For Cancer Control committee and address the Decatur Rotary Club at lunch. DIARY On Page 2.
Gov. James E. Folsom ordered a second emergency session beginning next Friday to consider repealing the relatives responsibility law and boosting old age pensions toward a $50 monthly average. Administration sources estimate the state share of the increase at about 10 million dollars yearly.
Snow and freezing weather snarled traffic across Britain and Europe. Two people died of exposure in Britain and two in Austria as blizzards blocked roads in Northern England. Vienna reported about a foot of snow paralyzing traffic in the capital.
George W. Cornell reports World Day of Prayer observed globally with Christians in about 130 countries and 20,000 U.S. communities joining. Observances began at daybreak in Fiji and Tonga and spread to churches hospitals colleges and factories worldwide.
Washington reports indicate the United States and its Korean War allies may denounce cease fire limits on forces due to Communist violations. Officials accuse China and North Korea of introducing jet aircraft into North Korea and increasing overall strength in breach of the 1953 armistice provisions.
Washington reports Russia turned over perhaps eight small coastal type submarines to Red China. Officials say Russians are training Chinese crews to operate them. At least three subs were sighted at Tsingtao across the Yellow Sea from Korea, with unclear activity near Formosa. Nationalists claim air strikes sunk two subs recently.
The Tennessee River at Keller Memorial Bridge rose 0.07 feet in 24 hours to 18.95 feet. Yesterday's high was 61 degrees at 4 p.m., low 38 this morning. At 8 a.m. today the temperature was 40. Partly cloudy and cooler today with increasing clouds tonight and Saturday. Highs 55 today, 40 tonight, 54 Saturday.
The Manila Pact conference ended with optimism as eight nations including Pakistan the Philippines France United States Great Britain New Zealand Australia and Thailand agreed to strengthen the area against aggression. A permanent SEATO secretariat was established in Bangkok and committees on military antisubversion and economic matters were formed to enforce the pact.
Formosa reporter Spencer Moosa writes that Nationalist China abandoned Nanchishan island to the Communists, evacuating about 5,000 troops and 2,000 civilians without U.S. help. Fortifications were blown, supplies moved to Formosa, and all civilians safely departed as the front shifted toward the Matsus and Quemoy.
The Democratic plan to provide a $20 tax cut per person won a first House test by 197 to 192 over a Republican bid to block the measure. Democrats, with a 29 vote majority, predicted victory while Republicans grew confident of defeat. The plan would give $20 per taxpayer and dependent, about $100 for a family of five, affecting roughly five million taxpayers.
Berkeley physicist Edward Teller predicts further atomic energy advances beyond the hydrogen bomb. In Science he warns progress may bring new dangers and surprises, noting the world rarely follows a straight path and credit may be misapplied to him for the H bomb work.
The jury awarded $1,000 to W. P. Richardson doing business as Walker Portrait Studio in a suit against Jerry Landrum. Richardson sought $10,000 for damages claiming obstruction of his agent at a Morgan County Fair wedding on Sept 18, 1954. The case closes the civil docket. criminal docket trials begin March 7.
Bonn reports the Parliament defeated a Socialist opposition bid to suspend debate on the Paris treaties to free and rearm West Germany. It marks the second failed maneuver since the three day ratification debate began in the Bundestag. A CDU spokesman called the Saar future status under the Paris pacts German territory.
Morgan County outlines free federal food commodities distribution with dates to be announced. Mayor H R Summer and officials plan to register residents, with first monthly distribution limited to those eligible by income scales and need.
The Sea Wolf, the Navy’s second nuclear submarine following Nautilus, is expected to be launched in May at General Dynamics Electric Boat in New London Connecticut. Built since June 1953, the 3,000 ton Sea Wolf uses an atomic engine of a different type and will reuse the Nautilus framework and nonfuel components at launch.
Cecil Padgett testified he saw Albert Fuller and a man identified as Arch Ferrell near the Patterson crime scene moments before the shooting. Padgett described hearing three gunshots and seeing Fuller and Ferrell run from the rear of the parking lot as Patterson was killed.
A 26 year old Black man named Ernest Vinson escaped from the Morgan County jail last night about 6 30 pm after being fed on the second floor. Jailer J B Reeder found the main door forced and the lock broken as Vinson fled likely through the East front exit and was still at large this morning.
