Second Lieutenant Willary R. Whitmore of the army air reserve corps drowned when his plane nose-dived into a gravel pit near Maxwell field Montgomery Alabama. Witness Jake Daniels saw Whitmore cling to the craft as it sank then swim for several minutes before vanishing. The plane sank in about 20 feet of water after a reported engine failure at about 100 feet. Whitmore, 25, from Wichita Kansas, had just completed a formation flight with Lieut. Albert Shephard and Harold Mace. A boat with two Negro men went out to assist but leaked and returned.
