A fire started by electrical wiring caused a small loss at Shumake Furniture Co. 818 Bank St. at 3 30 p.m. yesterday. Also notes on city court docket, church events, social meetings, visits, deaths, and a circuit court docket meeting set for December 28 at 9 a.m. at the courthouse.
More than 200 demonstrators marched on the prime minister’s offices in Amman demanding a pledge that the government would not sign the Baghdad Pact. Arab Legion troops dispersed protesters with tear gas as 400 rallied against Western sponsored moves. A separate attack on the U S consulate in Jerusalem followed. Prime Minister Ibrahim Hashim, named by King Hussein, formed a caretaker government to prepare for parliamentary elections within four months.
Auburn University was fined 2000 by SEC Commissioner Bernie Moore for giving Beaube twins 500 each in violation of recruiting rules. Hal Herring, Auburn assistant coach, arranged the payments on November 28. money was returned the next day. The Beaube brothers, Harry and Robert, were Emma Sansom High School standouts. The report goes to the SEC executive committee for possible further action.
Decatur will observe a long holiday weekend with Christmas on Sunday and Christmas Eve and New Year’s closing days. Alabama Gov. James E. Folsom ordered offices to close Thursday and reopen Tuesday. Chamber merchants, City Hall, and banks follow similar schedules with returns on Tuesday morning.
Cullman citizens named Charlie Klein and Mrs Claud Schlosser as Cullman’s Man and Woman of the Year after a Chamber of Commerce directors meeting. Klein received near unanimous support from civic and service clubs. Schlosser narrowly beat Mrs Bess Morrow among nine female nominees. plaques will be presented at the Chamber’s Feb 24 banquet.
The Ford Foundation plans to sell 10.2 million Ford Motor Co shares next month in a record equity issue. Filing with the SEC shows 1955 nine month earnings of 312.2 million dollars and a 60 cent per share quarterly dividend to begin in 1956.
Limestone Representative James M. Dement plans a bill to alter Limestone County education board elections. The proposal would elect four members by districts and a fifth by countywide vote, following a prior referendum approving districting for the board of revenue and its chairman. Dement aims to offer the measure at the January special legislative session.
Decatur Tennessee River reading this morning was 16.47 feet with a 0.02 foot fall in 24 hours and sea level at 550.77 feet. Yesterday's high 50 and low 25 with today expected partly cloudy and rising temperatures. highs around 50 and lows near 30 through Thursday. Waterfowl shooting times listed for Thursday and Friday from 6:22 a.m. to 4:10 p.m. and 6:23 a.m. to 4:11 p.m. respectively.
The Pentagon proposes a billion dollar increase in defense spending for next year, with overall defense funds rising toward the 34 billion current year total and a near two billion boost in the base defense appropriation. A new atomic powered surface ship is planned and missile spending would rise about one third.
A bill prepared for the January 3 special session would shift paying office and related expenses from the Morgan County general fund to public school funds. It would allow the superintendent to spend for furniture equipment stationery postage forms telephone census enumeration and supplies.
John Pennell a 55 year old operator of the Indian Hills golf course on Burleson Mountain pled guilty before Judge W H Long to possessing or operating gambling devices. He was fined $50 and costs after Morgan County sheriff's deputies raided Indian Hills last Saturday finding two slot machines in a small outbuilding. Pennell who lives nearby was arrested. The sheriff's department did not disclose raid results.
An unofficial report cites average North Alabama education superintendents earning 7200 dollars yearly and 150 dollars monthly for travel, versus Morgan County at 4800 yearly and 75 monthly. A local bill proposes raising Morgan County pay to 6500 yearly with standard expenses, while a maneuver to appoint a commissioner of education could cut the current term short. Gilchrist is the only local legislator commenting on the bill as lawmakers weigh approvals.
The Eisenhowers return to Washington for their first White House Christmas. With three grandchildren and a possible new granddaughter, plans hinge on Santa's arrival while Ike recovers from a heart attack. The president flies from Gettysburg. Mrs Eisenhower follows by car to finalize White House plans. Maj John Eisenhower and the children will be there for Christmas.
A Miami to Boston Eastern Constellation crashed on landing killing 17 aboard. It follows two Florida air crashes in three days, including two Air Force bombers near Tampa and a Port St. Joe collision that left three dead and three missing. Rescue crews fought flames for hours as witnesses recalled the dramatic landing.
The Decatur city council raised annual licenses for six professional groups including doctors dentists chiropractors and attorneys to 100 for earners over 5000 and 50 for those under. A flat 150 license was set for the local television station and Decatur Marble and Granite Works faces 75 local and 150 itinerant fees. An itinerant fee of 100 was imposed on Decatur Glass Co. Streets in the Brookhaven subdivision between the L and N Railroad and Danville Road will be paved per plans by city engineer E K Gregg.
