The Associated Press reports the East faced the coldest spell of the season with readings as low as 33 below zero. Polar air surged in, Mt. Washington New Hampshire recorded 33 below, and New York State saw overnight lows of 23 at Lowville and 17 at Watertown.

TVA announced a $13 million payment to the U.S. Treasury on appropriations for power facilities, bringing total payments to $178,131,519 to date and lifting year-to-date payments to $27 million. The agency also turned over $7,263,895 from nonpower sources, mainly fertilizer sales and retired plant sales.
A Morgan County education bill would abolish the superintendent's office and create a new commissioner of education post with an $1800 salary increase to 6500. The change would not alter duties or term, Wooten's term to end July 1, 1959. Local reps and the state senator offered limited comment.
Circuit Judge J Russell McElroy granted the state two weeks to file written briefs arguing that ex Attorney General Garrett should undergo a mental examination before trial for the murder of A L Patterson. Garrett’s defense opposes the test, citing prior Supreme Court rulings. The judge previously said he lacked authority to order a sanity test while Garrett is free on bond and has not pleaded insanity. See STATE on Page 2.
Yugoslavia was elected to a two year term on the UN Security Council in a lottery style deal with the Philippines sharing the term. The General Assembly approved 43 votes to 11 for the Philippines with Finland and Sweden each getting one, amid mixed reaction and questions about the procedure.
Lawrence County begins constructing a road from Spring Creek into a 79 acre riverfront tract leased from TVA for 19 years at one dollar yearly. The site, a Civil War river crossing point, will develop into a regional park with access roads picnic areas and future features like swimming beaches and a boat harbor. TVA leases extend to nearby Limestone Colbert and Marshall counties with similar recreational development.
Dr. and Mrs. Homer V. Bradshaw American medical missionaries held by the Communists for five years crossed the Hong Kong border to freedom. Mrs. Bradshaw appeared malnourished and mentally unsettled. Dr. Bradshaw said he endured slow starvation but improved after Red Cross food parcels.
Lawrence County officials await word from the State Highway Department on the location of a link in a proposed federal state highway. C C McWhorter said an engineering crew is ready once officials pick a route for the Cullman Tuscumbia segment from Five Points toward Moulton.
In Amman a 2,000 strong Arab mob stormed the U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem and tore down the American flag in protests against Jordan joining the Baghdad Pact. Other items note Huntsville textile strike talks, Eisenhower returning for Christmas, and the Census Bureau cotton ginning totals for 1955.
Secretary of State Dulles announced a proposed 200 million dollar rise in foreign aid next year and asked Congress for a 4.9 billion dollar appropriation for economic assistance. He cited Soviet activity and warned against Trojan horse style aid.

In Weatherford Texas a mother of four supported her husband’s accusation that Rev Chester Stevens, a married minister, adulterated with her wife. The husband, 47, is charged with six shots that killed Stevens in the minister’s yard. A bond hearing is set as prosecutors obtained statements from Mrs Vaughn. Doyle, the minister’s 4 year old son, witnessed the killing.
In Vienna Georgia Senator Walter F George announces he will run again for re nomination in Georgia Democratic primary ending retirement rumors after 33 years in the Senate as committee chairman. Opponent Herman Talmadge hints at a spring statement while Ellis Arnall declines comment. George cites major issues for the new session and pledges to focus on Washington duties.
