City council to hold public hearings on paving projects
Public hearings are scheduled tonight at 7 p.m. in a regular city council meeting for paving 8th Street from 4th Ave to Somerville Road and 13th Ave SE from 7th to 8th streets plus Canal Street from Market to Walter Streets. The council will adjourn after the hearings and reconvene tomorrow at 2 p.m. A small fire damaged the home of C. D. Roberts at 423 5th Ave SW yesterday morning. Young Man Found Dead Near Courtland Crossing
The body of James Garth Jr., 22, a Black man, was found in a ditch two miles north of Courtland Crossing on Highway 20 daylight today. Sheriff says no evidence of violence and he may have died during a seizure. Funeral services will be announced by Reynolds of Decatur.

PHENIX CITY Alabama A WA hearing was set today in Circuit Judge J Russell Mc Elroy's court over a request for a sanity test for ex Attorney General S Garrett. Garrett is indicted for murder in the A L Patterson killing that spurred a Phenix City vice cleanup last year. The judge earlier denied a sanity hearing, noting Garrett has not pled insanity and remains free on 12500 dollar bond. Atty Gen John Patterson asked for the sanity hearing under a state law he says allows the state to determine mental condition.
