Herbert Hoover Jr. resigns from the State Department to resume mining engineering work. President Eisenhower names Christian Herter of Massachusetts to succeed him, with Herter to assume the post around February 1 after Senate confirmation.
Frank G. Yaney announces a new general real estate agency in the Pryor Motor building on First Ave across from The Decatur Daily. He is a longtime Decatur resident and former manager at Cooper Wells & Co, a Morgan County Real Estate Board member, and an associate Decatur Rotary Club member.
Pete Henderson named leader of Morgan County March of Dimes Campaign January 2 to 31. He manages the local Commercial Credit Corp office and holds posts in Decatur Jaycees Rotary Club and First Methodist Church. Campaign slogan Lets Finish the Job.
Decatur city schools will get an immediate federal payment of 12 117 under Public Law 874 aiding districts in federally affected areas. Officials expect about 15 000 more by year’s end, with 3 000 from extra enrollment and a 10 percent withhold tied to attendance. This marks the second such payment, the first being 4 022.80 for 1954 55.

He argued existing institutions like the IMF and Export-Import Bank will furnish most aid, while Britain may withdraw up to a half billion dollars from the IMF for oil and other obligations.

Mayors from all Morgan County towns will meet Decatur Mayor Knox McRre on Monday at 10 a.m. to declare Hungarian Relief Week. During the week the county Red Cross aims to raise 1054 dollars as the local share of a five million dollar relief goal for Hungarians.
Scientists fired a 125 mile high instrument rocket from Patrick Air Force Base Cape Canaveral Florida in a Vanguard project rehearsal. The test reached 4000 mph before splashing into the Atlantic offshore from Miami. Navy and civilian teams evaluated automatic radio and electronic systems and new launch facilities for the next year’s satellite launch plans.
At the annual Morgan County United Fund meeting at the Decatur electric department auditorium, 1957 officers were named and 20 new directors elected for three year terms. Barrett C. Shelton was re elected president with Q E Eddens as first vice president and B G Hall second vice president. James N Bloodworth is third vice president, Mrs H B Norwood secretary and Lester H Smith treasurer. New directors include James Crowell Mrs H B Norwood B G Ryan Charles Norman Rex Rankin Lester Smith Decatur and E G Moebes Organized Labor.
A Tuesday annexation election will decide if the western Decatur area becomes part of the city limits. The proposed parcel runs from 12th to 13th Street area along Moulton Street to First Street then toward 16th Avenue. Firemen A C Turner and Horace Standridge live in the area. The vote follows a city council resolution on residency requirements and a petition by a majority of area property owners.
The Decatur Chamber of Commerce asks holders of airline courtesy cards to contact the Chamber office on Bank Street by phone 63 or by postcard giving name and address. Information supports continued efforts to obtain direct airline service to Decatur.
Circuit Court resumes Monday at 9 o'clock in Morgan County. W. J. Duncan Jr of the Alabama Bonded Warehouse faces 19 forgery and 17 receipt charges over cotton not in possession. Wesley Patterson of Lacon is also implicated as the Duncan Cotton Co. audit shows receipts for over 10 000 bales not on hand. The firm suspended operations amid a debt exceeding one million dollars.
Montgomery lawyer Frank J. Mizell Jr resigns as a federal hearings officer in protest over the Fred Gray draft case. He denounces the indefinite deferment of the bus boycott spokesman as disgraceful and an abuse of ministerial pulpit protection to dodge military service.
Reports from Russia indicate growing demand among Soviet university students for political liberalization. Western diplomats note arrests of Moscow University students forming an underground group. Khrushchev reportedly threatened to expel students who did not toe the party line.
