The state's 16587.50 payment for the municipal airport purchase has arrived, said Mayor H. R. Summer. The federal appropriation remains pending, and Asa Rountree Jr. of the state aeronautics department gave personal attention to the matter.
The House un-American Activities Committee served a subpoena on J Peters head of the communist underground per Whittaker Chambers. Nixon said the committee now links prewar Red activity described by Chambers with wartime Russian spy cases linked to Elizabeth Bentley.
Washington reports two civilian Russia specialists join the national war college for the 1948 49 session. Elbridge Durbrow recently returned from Moscow and Dr John A Morrison a Soviet geography expert join 114 officers and civilian officials for studies in atomic age problems international relations and advanced military planning. State Department sends 17 representatives while the Treasury Budget Bureau and CIA each provide one attendee.
TVA substation in Decatur reports temperatures climbing to 94 by noon with a high of 98 forecast for Sunday. Morning readings progress 8 am 80, 9 am 84, 10 am 87, 11 am 90, noon 94.
Wally C. Owens, 24, confessed to forging and cashing three checks drawn on the State National Bank in Decatur. He was arrested after attempting to cash a fourth $100 check using Clyde W. Wair’s chauffeur license from Fairview Tennessee for identification. Owens claimed AWOL status from Ft Jackson since August 8 and listed unit details. Police say he will likely be charged with forgery and moved to county jail.
L. C. Hawkins, 20, is jailed in Morgan county awaiting trial for a 1947 burglary. He was moved from Kilby prison to Decatur by Chief Deputy Kirkpatrick after finishing a term in Sheffield. Hawkins is charged with burglarizing a store owned by Bes sie Collier in February 1947.
Alabama pro Truman forces led by State Senator Joseph N. Langan urged electors to vote for Democratic nominees regardless of state pledges. They planned court action after the November election to force electors to support Truman, despite a 1945 law and an Alabama high court advisory ruling deeming it invalid.
A Northwest Airlines Martin 2 0 2 crashed into a steep ravine near Winona Minnesota during a severe storm. Thirty six people died and ten bodies were recovered. a human chain was formed to reach those still trapped in the wreckage.
CIO leaders signal strong backing for President Truman in the November race while planning to devote more effort to electing labor-friendly congress members. The 51 member executive board met to endorse Truman, with ADA backing adding pressure for liberal candidates.
Firefighters battled a tractor fire at the Country Club today after a moving machine ignited. Flames from a nearby gasoline storage tank were contained before an explosion could occur, with an estimated 200 gallons involved. no injuries or losses were reported.
Dewey Miller, a 23 year old farmer, was the first man registered this morning at the Morgan County selective service roll call. Volunteers, including Mrs. Henry Sigman, assisted as a long line formed from the Red Cross work rooms to the courthouse annex. Officials expect about 480 local men to register across Tuesday and Wednesday as the Aug 30, 1922 deadline approaches.
Americans begin A day registration as part of a peacetime draft plan. From Aug 30 to Sept 18 about 5.0 million men aged 18 to 25 will register at centers and fill postcard forms. Registration is a census not a draft. Only a fraction will be drafted for 21 months over the next two years.
The U S military began moving its aircraft from the East Coast danger zone as a hurricane threats intensified. Naval planes were dispatched from Chinco Teague to Buffalo and Niagara Falls while hundreds more were redirected to Griffis Rome Harrisburg Greensboro and other bases. Air Force pilots stood by in the Carolinas Virginia and Maryland with alerts issued at Pope Shaw Turner and Langley Fields.
Robert Pates, 52, Black, fatally hurt in an L and N freight yard accident Sunday morning, will be buried after a 3 PM service at Shiloh Baptist Church. He died at 8:40 AM at the hospital after being struck by a blow off piston and engine, which released steam. Survived by his widow Lucy Mae Pates and one sister.
Henry Wallace arrived in Greensboro North Carolina to a hostile reception as a crowd of more than 1000 booed him and hurled eggs and tomatoes. Police were called as he attempted to speak on Southern resources and the region’s economic structure.
Marshall Haynes of Louisville Nashville Railway announced a status change for the Hummingbird at Decatur from flag to regular stop. G A Yager confirmed the update noting Decatur’s growing importance and ongoing business causes, with Decatur now listed as a regular stop in future schedules.

Morgan County officials received a petition from Henry Wallace seeking permission to address a mixed audience on the courthouse steps at 8 15 a m Wednesday. Wallace plans to address only non segregated audiences and will tour Huntsville Guntersville Gadsden and Birmingham before an after noon talk on the Jefferson County courthouse lawn.
A crowd at Burlington hurled eggs and tomatoes at Wallace as he paused after a speech. Police surrounded him as he moved toward his awaiting car, the spectacle unfolding before he and two African American women entered the vehicle en route to Greensboro.
Riley Arnold 35 of Moulton received a 53 dollar check from local citizens for his heroism during the Poole Oil Company fire. As a gasoline truck driver he steered a burning 3100 gallon load a mile east of town to avert a major explosion, then parked the vehicle in a clear area before the blast.
Hurricane warnings stretched from Wilmington to Cape Hatteras as a compact tropical storm with 115 mile per hour winds moved toward the coast. The Miami hurricane center said the storm veered toward Cape Hatteras with hurricane winds possible tonight and the center likely near midnight.
Early morning advisory reports Hurricane inneneatay moving northwest at 10 to 12 miles per hour. At 4 AM EST the storm lay about 250 miles south southeast of Wilmington. Chief Forecaster Grady Norton indicated a possible curve to the north. See WARNINGS on Page 2.
Dr. Keller and his wife die when their car collides with a train near Tuscumbia. Injured were Keller daughters Jean and Ann and son-in-law John Parrish. The accident occurred at 9 35 P M on Highway 20 two miles east of Tuscumbia en route home from a Ft Walton vacation. John Wilkes Jr and Tom Willingham aided at the scene. Keller had led Florence State Teachers College through notable growth during his 10 year tenure. the college opens this year with 71 faculty. Funeral arrangements were announced locally.
Cotton spilled onto Bank Street this afternoon when a truck platform from E. P. King of Leighton failed, dumping seven bales into the road. Workmen removed the cotton and cleared the street to restore traffic.
