Forty four Nebraska beef calves will be fed out by Morgan County farm boys under the Morgan County farm extension service and local business leaders. Selection will be by County Agent L T Wagnon and others with calves to be exhibited and sold at the opening of the North Alabama Livestock Coliseum next April.
Democratic Campaign Chief J Howard McGrath appealed to Southern Democrats to back Truman in November. He argued that 1932 hardships contrast with present prosperity under Roosevelt and Truman, citing economic gains in the South and a pro Truman mood amid Southern states' rights sentiment.
An escaped Florida convict, Clarence Alberty, has orally admitted to being part of the moonlight beach killings at Ormond, Florida, two weeks earlier. He said he stood guard while another man shot Gregory Blount and killed Mary Mucks after raping her. Alberty identified his accomplice to officers, and Daytona Beach authorities prepared charges in Florida.
Veterans must register within the next two weeks at the Morgan county board headquarters in the courthouse annex. Men born in 1922 after August 30, 1922, register Monday with an estimated 243 expected attendees. Joseph H. Calvin of Decatur is named government appeal agent for Morgan county to review classifications and report back to the board. Grady J. Long of Hartselle chairs the Morgan county selective service board.
Weather bureau issued alerts as a small intense hurricane centered near 28.9 N 72.0 W 550 miles east of Daytona Beach moving northwest around 12 mph with winds near 120 mph. Shipping urged caution and coastal residents advised to monitor advisories. storm forecasters warned Georgia and Carolina coasts as the system slowed.
Alabama Hosiery Mill will operate on a six day schedule starting Sunday at midnight. General manager Lloyd Lively said the change is due to sale of older machines at another Mojud plant and extra production needed for anticipated Christmas business. The six day week is expected to last about three months.
In Birmingham on August 28 the Pro Truman Democrats passed a resolution demanding the 11 men nominated for the May 4 presidential primary either resign or pledge support to the Truman Barkley ticket. State Senator Joseph N. Lahgan of Mobile introduced the measure, and Guy Matlock, local chairman, reported about 200 attendees.
Horace Wilkinson of Birmingham files suit in Mobile circuit court against the Mobile Labor Journal and partners accusing them of publishing a defamatory article in the July 13 1948 issue with intent to injure his reputation. The piece covered an anti Truman Democrats convention in Birmingham naming Strom Thurmond and Fielding Wright as states rights presidential candidates.
Langan warned court action could follow if the 11 electors named May 4 ignore the pro Truman request. The group pledged to Thur mond Wright states rights ticket with no move to field a separate Truman Barker slate. Speakers included Langan Matlock and ex Rep Luther Patrick. The meeting adopted a resolution asking resignations but took no further steps.
Mrs C R Ferguson of 522 Sixth Avenue W is in Decatur General Hospital after a two vehicle accident Saturday on the highway between WU S 31 and Mooresville. A slick wet road from a shower caused a pickup truck driven by her husband to overturn, injuring her. another car carrying two women slid off the road nearby but caused no injuries. Highway patrol said a full report was not yet available Saturday.
A quarter of a million dollars will fund a modern elementary school for West Decatur serving 250 children with future plans to house 350. The site on the Danville road between the Harry Higdon home and City Park Greenhouse fronts 450 feet and includes 13 plus acres bought from Raymond Britain. another lot from J W Joiner completed the parcel. Architect Raymond Sizemore, Montgomery, is preparing plans as annexation votes on September 14 may add area to Decatur and trigger the larger facility. The single story building will replace Ward 1 and Joe Wheeler schools if the annexation occurs.
The Associated Press reports increased Berlin tension after communist assaults on city hall and alleged Soviet efforts to incite riots. U S authorities protest a Russian jeep incident in the Soviet sector and release an American correspondent and others jailed, with no injuries reported.
Morgan County Board of Education and Hartselle City Council reached an agreement to spend 100000 for new classrooms equipment and improvements at Hartselle elementary and Morgan County High. Contracts for construction of one new five classroom building at each school are expected soon. The plan follows the city approved 7.2 mill tax authorization.
In Moscow the American British and French envoys met at the British embassy for two hours but yielded no four power communique on the Kremlin talks over the German crisis. British and American diplomats in London anticipated a statement soon, with drafts circulating for study by ministers. Professional outboard racers from a wide area will compete in Decatur on September 6 as the Southeastern divisional championship under the Wheeler Lake Yacht Club.
