Partly cloudy this afternoon tonight and Wednesday with widely scattered thundershowers in south and central areas. Decatur cotton market noon quotation shows middling at 30.75 and strict low at 29.75. Community notices include hospital admissions at Baugh and Wiley clinic and Decatur General, PTA ice cream supper planned, and a business tour by Decatur merchants.
Henry Wallace the Progressive presidential nominee faced egg and tomato throws and boos in Charlotte and Hickory as he spoke to crowds of thousands. Police detained three men on disorderly conduct charges and Wallace vowed to continue his southern campaign, noting supporters aimed to gain sympathy.
Census Bureau reports that the average tax bill for each of 144 million Americans during the year ended June 30, 1947 totaled 344.46 dollars. The federal government provided 257.36, with 46.84 from states and 40.26 from local governments.
Power was off for 1 hour 18 minutes across about 60 percent of the city Monday after a 44 000 volt fuse at the central substation blew twice and a transformer failed. Power returned by 4 54 p m with only minor disruption east of Sixth Avenue. The city bought the 22 year old transformer from TVA and will repair and replace it as a spare. This marks the department's first major transformer failure in 10 years.
Morgan county Selective Service headquarters reported 338 men born in 1923 registered on Monday at the courthouse annex. Officials expected more to register today as 12 volunteers processed a long line of 24 year olds. About two thirds were veterans with 15 transients among Monday registrants.
Double funeral services for Dr. J. A. Keller and Mrs. Keller were planned for 3:30 p.m. at Florence State Teachers College amphitheatre with Rev. Samuel E. Maddox officiating. Internment would be at Florence Cemetery. The Kellers died from a Sunday night car crash returning from a Florida vacation. two daughters and a son-in-law were injured but not seriously.
Miami reporting an emerging hurricane in the Atlantic about 300 miles east of Martinique as the Benjamin Grison steamship reports 50 to 60 mph winds and rough seas. A Navy hurricane hunter plane is to investigate and a likely advisory may come from San Juan. Barometer shows 29.80 inches.
Hatteras North Carolina reports a tropical hurricane moving up the Atlantic coast should miss the mainland if this course holds. The Weather Bureau warns of strong winds along the coast tonight with 30 mph speeds at midmorning. Maryland Delaware and New Jersey forecasters expect northeast winds this evening and tonight.
Four police squads dispersed angry draft registrants after the draft board offices closed at 10 p.m. CDT with 350 still waiting to register. No damage or arrests occurred after authorities restored order following an earlier office partition incident.

Western military governors in Germany meet in Berlin to discuss currency and Berlin blockade fallout as diplomats in Moscow and Bonn coordinate. Berlin’s city council proposes a five member delegation to Bonn for a constitutional draft in the Western zones. The report also notes Tito’s stance toward Russia and ongoing global tensions including Palestine Kashmir, and shifts in French leadership amid a volatile European scene.
City parks will close today after the most active season in their history. Parks opened June 1 and maintenance runs through August 31. Delano, Greenwood, and East End Negro parks saw improvements with higher softball attendance and tennis court use.
In New York Aug 31 Whittaker Chambers identified J Peters as the No 1 figure in the underground. Peters refused to answer questions about his alleged communist ties prompting subcommittee threats of contempt. The case returns to deportation proceedings before immigration officials.
The Decatur General Motors Acceptance Corporation will open September 17 to serve Decatur Huntsville the Tri cities and Russellville officials said J I Bailey moved from Dothan to head the new office located on Lee Street GMAC is a finance concern and Chevrolet products are manufactured by General Motors.
De catur high school senior band director Carl Schwuchow has called the first practice for seven o'clock Wednesday night September first at the junior high school. About 75 to 80 students are expected. The high school band awaits state games is preparing for the opening of the Decatur stadium on September 17.
The Morgan County courthouse hosts Henry Wallace as he launches his Deep South presidential campaign on Wednesday. The site, famed for the Scottsboro trials, drew attention over venue changes from Jackson County. The trials centered on alleged systemic exclusion of Black jurors, with defense led by Samuel Simon Liebowitz and state counsel including Thomas E. Knight.
Governor James E. Folsom stated he does not expect harm to Henry Wallace during his Alabama visit. He ordered a highway patrol escort to handle traffic as Wallace travels the state. Perry Gardner a 17 year old from Detroit was jailed in Morgan County charged with burglary after deputies and Trinity residents pursued him Monday afternoon. He allegedly stole a 22 automatic rifle, shells, clothing, glasses, and some change from H. C. Sharp’s home on Courtland highway near Trinity Lane. Deputy Kirkpatrick Officer Coulter and others chased him. Gardner dropped to four rifle shells as Highway Patrolman Paul Jones intercepted him.
Henry Wallace a progressive presidential candidate is set for an open air speech on the Decatur courthouse steps at 8 15 am Wednesday. Local officials say no segregation law forbids mixed audiences but warn masks are banned in public disguises and a strong police presence will enforce the code.
Extensive press coverage was arranged for Henry Wallace's campaign tour of Alabama. Leroy Simms head of the AP Bureau in Birmingham Rex Thomas of the AP and Fred Taylor political writer The Birmingham News are expected to greet Wallace Wednesday morning. Officials say an anti lynch measure would bar intimidation aimed at driving people away from an area and could apply to egg tossing. Reports from Birmingham claim Ku Klux Klan observers may attend the Wallace rally, with masks restricted but robes allowed. Railroad notes say the Wallace party will pass through Decatur and return via the Tennessean and Joe Wheeler, affecting late night switch facilities.
