Gene Ratliff Chalmers Riley Darwyn Braswell and Donald Watterson attend All Star football game in Tuscaloosa tonight. Mr and Mrs Howard Craft and son Kenneth visit Decatur and Cullman. Rev W W Glass Frank Siebert Walter Clapton and Sam Malone attend Florence Kiwanis noon meeting. Glass spoke on Down Paper Mill Lane detailing growth and service clubs. Mrs J W Porter moved from Jefferson hospital to Baugh and Riley clinic. Two arrested for public sunkenness, says Sheriff Humphry. Mrs Irene Earwood ill at home. Charles Evans Hughes, 86, former chief justice, is seriously ill at a Massachusetts vacation resort. His son says a weak heart worsened while Hughes was here with his daughter and sister, who were summoned as his condition declined.
The 100 mph Atlantic hurricane edged northwestward today with a ridge of high pressure to the north likely making its course shift west-northwest. Winds near the center reached 115 mph on a Navy hunter plane as ships flee the storm path. The Petmakis Nomikos reported the disturbance but was not heard from again, and coast guards say no distress is evident. Storm warnings expect a northwest track for at least 12 hours.
Coast Guard took over the $100,000 gasoline explosion investigation aboard the tanker Pan Georgia in the Atlantic on August 13. The ship carried 124000 barrels of gasoline and the blast, caused by vapors, damaged the forward section but caused no injuries. The Pan Georgia, operated by National Bulk Carriers of New York, reached Mobile for repairs after initial work in Norfolk, Virginia.
Two German youths ages 18 and 19 were found aboard the freighter Wolverine and jailed in Mobile awaiting a returning ship. They admitted slipping aboard en route from Bremen to the United States and told immigration officers they knew they would not succeed. An immigration board ordered their return to Germany.
Sen Lister Hill told 800 Farm Security Administration members at Belle Mina that rights must be fought for as they defend states rights. Sen Sparkman and Rep Bob Jones spoke on farm legislation with Sparkman noting parity payments and Hill emphasizing individual rights and local growth. A tour of the Belle Mina experimental farm preceded the talks.
In Los Angeles on August 27 Mae West prepared to testify in a lawsuit by writers Edwin K. O'Brien and Michael Kane alleging she pirated material for Catherine Was Great. A prior audience heard discussion on Russian history as West defended herself saying she never saw the script. The case hinges on the order of Catherine’s loves and potential material similarity.
Claude Allen Taylor files in the circuit clerk's office seeking 1500 damages from Southern Wood Preserving Co of Atlanta Ga over a collision Monday a mile south of Flint on highway 31 Taylor claims car damage and injuries a writ of attachment for 1500 is signed by Judge Newton B Powell Attorneys for the plaintiff are Robert Hutson and Noble J Russell jury trial demanded.
In Brighton England a thief breached Barclay's Bank and made off with 250 cigarettes from the directors' board room. No other valuables were taken and no injuries reported. The incident occurred August 27. Police are investigating.
Communists stormed the Berlin city hall breaking up the anti communist council meeting as Russian dominated police watched. The mob vowed to return repeatedly and stop the city government from functioning while a split council looms in a divided city.
Western envoys held a three hour session with Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov on the German crisis in Moscow. Ambassador Bedell Smith refused to promise a communique tonight as Andrei Vishinsky attended the talks for the first time. Heavy rain accompanied the envoys as they left the Kremlin and Smith wore a solemn expression.
The body of Pfc. William Charles Randle son of Mr and Mrs E B Randle 1718 Eighth Avenue E will arrive in Decatur Monday at 2 55 PM Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Mutual Service A Randle was killed in action at age 20 aboard the USS Nashville on December 13 1944
Chief Examiner Ralph Eagerton accused the governor's highway investigating committee of making false statements about the department during a specially called session. He said the department was created by law with specific duties and did not need defense.
In San Diego two youths, Ronald Earnest 16 and Ralph Earnest 14, died after a hunting trip incident. Kenneth Goetschl, 15, witnessed Ronald aim and fire at Ralph, the rifle misfired, then Ronald shot himself. Deputy Coroner Lloyd Jones relayed the account.
The News-Post reports a run-down farm near Westminster Maryland once bought by Alger and Priscilla Hiss and later abandoned. Documents show sale contracts dated 1936 and 1937, a 1936 letter by Hiss, and inquiries by J W Chambers. A questioned sale proceeded as the estate sought more than 750 dollars while Hiss sought termination.
Gov. J. Strom Thurmond, rising for States Rights presidential bid, warns Arkansas voters the civil rights program aims at centralizing power and creating a police state. He labels the anti poll tax and anti lynching measures as federal control bills and urges delegates to back the States Rights ticket.
Alabama Attorney General says pinball machines are illegal as games of chance under a state Supreme Court ruling. Despite illegality, the state will collect a privilege license tax from operators, per a advisory opinion requested by the revenue commissioner.
Cullman Electric Cooperative authorized to borrow 598000 dollars from the REA to finance a new headquarters building extend lines and serve new customers. S Brook Holleman of the state Finance Department approved the loan yesterday.

In Montgomery Alabama Attorney General Albert Carmichael held that Morgan County tax assessors need not maintain separate records for old Decatur and Albany areas. After mergers and constitutional amendments raised rates to 15.5 mills, 5 mills from Albany’s tax funds old bonds. Assessors must keep records showing assessable values for the Decatur portion still.
Ground breaking ceremonies will be held here Tuesday for a 1 500 000 livestock coliseum with Gov. James E Folsom as principal speaker and former Gov. Chauncey Sparks taking part. Coliseum plans date from Sparks' administration. construction to start after final plans are completed.
Decatur businessfolk urged to reserve spots for a farm tour Tuesday at 12 30 PM. Delegates will depart the Chamber of Commerce office for Eva area farms and plan to return by 5 PM.
Four Decatur businessmen bought parcels from the Decatur Land company as individual owners. Purchases included about 11,000 city lots and 700 acres of farm lands once held by the company formed in 1887. Buyers were Russell Speake, Clay Callaham, Davis Hodges, and Raymond Britain.
