Thousands of Italians in the south camp outside their homes after a series of tremors over two weeks. In Indianapolis three boys aged 6, 4, and 2 were found tied by their necks to a bed and are now in the Marion county children's guardian home. Their mother Virginia Hauk, 22, and Nathaniel Green, 42, were jailed on vagrancy charges. Green's mother owns the home. The boys wore dirty shorts, suffered sores, and were believed tied last week for disobedience.
INDIANAPOLIS August 25 Captain Marion Williams arrived home from Germany this morning and embraced his wife who he believed was dead. He then rested, and a military policeman with a similar name was sent home on emergency furlough. He spoke by phone to his mother as the shock passed. The couple’s 19 month old Carlene Renee and five year old Gletha Sue welcomed their Daddy.
City planning officials outline a 30 year waterfront development plan with TVA and state support, aiming to place TVA river property into municipal hands to guide riverfront industry and recreation while preserving public parks and potential harbor use. Approval voiced by several attendees at a Tuesday public hearing.
Taft Patterson 35 of Hartselle is jailed on second degree murder and leaving scene charges after a Saturday night wreck on Alabama 33 that fatally injured Jeff Weedon 35 of Bluff City. Juanita Martin 25 of Gadsden was listed in good condition and Newman Jackson 24 of Valdermosa Springs was treated and released. Howard Russell 30 of Valdermosa Springs sustained minor injuries. Patterson was arrested Tuesday at his home four miles east of Hartselle by Deputy Garland Nuby and held on a $1500 bond.
In Bowling Green Kentucky authorities bound 72 year old Mrs Kate Goad and her 34 year old daughter Mrs Katherine Lee to the Warren county grand jury on a murder charge in the August 14 death of Allie S Lee. A laboratory report on contents found in the stomach of 52 year old James A Croslin is awaited before setting an examination trial. The two men died after a meal at the Lee home and poison was found in Lees stomach. investigators believe buttermilk was the vehicle.
Soviet Vice Consul Zot L Chepurnykh left the Russian consulate for good and headed to La Guardia airport. Secretary of State Marshall said the United States will accept Russia's order closing the American consulate in Vladivostok and noted no progress toward reopening in Leningrad. Moscow also ordered the closure of Soviet consulates in New York and San Francisco, accelerating the recall of Soviet citizens from the United States.
More than 3,000 workers at Los Alamos returned to their jobs ending a week-long strike. The stoppage ended after AFL union representatives and Brown & Root Inc officials reached an agreement. Brown & Root will hire all but key personnel through New Mexico employment offices but will not sign a union contract.
Aug 25 Berlin Russian and Western troops clash in a tense border scene. A German intelligence agent for the U S Army was shot and killed near Coburg after crossing into the Soviet zone. Russian authorities accuse Berlin officials of police split and black market disruption.
The first bale of cotton in Trinity was brought in Tuesday afternoon. Luther Glenn grew the cotton on John A. Lile's farm. The bale weighed 515 pounds and was baled at Trinity gin. No sale has occurred yet.
The government reports a rising cost of living with a 9.7 percent year over year increase and a 30.3 percent rise since June 1946. A typical family faces a 705 dollar yearly market basket, and GM workers receive a three-cent-an-hour raise. Retail food prices up 1.3 percent, with wide gaps in goods and services since May.
Mrs. Oksana Kasenkina, a 42 year old Russian schoolteacher, says she jumped from a third floor window of the New York Russian consulate to escape. She told Roosevelt Hospital reporters she did not intend to kill herself and did not want to return to Russia. In Cairo on August 25 the Arab Legion commander Lt Col Abdullah Tel warned UN observers that the Arab forces would not tolerate further alleged Jewish truce violations in Jerusalem. He said if Jewish actions continue, the Legion could clear 100000 Jews from the city, shielding Arabs from UN accusations of aggression.
Birmingham industry spokesmen urged opposition to annexation plans to extend city limits to include major plants. Robert Gregg of Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Co. argued higher taxes would hurt competitiveness and cited rail costs and low grade iron ore. Other opponents named are Hugh Morrow of Sloss-Sheffield, C E Fontaine of Lone Star Cement, B H McCrackin of Republic Steel, and B C Cord of Woodward Iron.
George Griffin Bentley was found guilty of assault and battery and fined 50 dollars and costs in the only case tried this morning before Judge W H Long. Other cases set for today were disposed of by 10 a.m as two persons pleaded guilty while six defendants failed to appear. Terry Looney received a 50 dollar fine plus costs for a prohibition violation. Clifford Morgan was fined 5 dollars and costs on a guilty vagrancy plea. Those who forfeited bond and were ordered re-arrested included Ed Jones George Alexander Clayton Beltz Jervis Jones Jackson and El nora Ballentine charged with prohibition violations and Dudley Morris charged with assault with a deadly weapon. Susie Mitchells prohibition case was not pressed Edward Lee Ball tampering with a private automobile was continued and Sam Mosley prohibition charge was passed for 30 days. In Inglewood California seven year old Paul Homan was struck by a freight train near railroad tracks losing both legs after waking from an eight day coma he smiled when he took his first food. His playmates gathered scrap for aid raising 145 dollars and extended the collection to Hollywood.
