American Will Wed His Air Mail Bride In London Office
Joe Conti a 33-year-old carpenter from Richmond Indiana will marry Ingeborg Schlueter 25 of Berlin at Paddington registry office the next day. Courtship and engagement were arranged by air mail radio and cablegrams as British rules on foreign marriages were overcome. Ingeborg met Joe on August 7 and says they knew he was the right man from the start.

Tragic Elkmont Truck Crash Kills Schoolgirl Barbara Jo Hargrove
Seven year old Barbara Jo Hargrove of Elkmont was killed when struck by Aubie Addison Locke Jr.’s three quarter ton Army truck on the Ardmore road shortly before 8 A M. The accident occurred one mile east of Elkmont as she walked to school.

Four Killed as Car Hits Pole Near Mobile Alabama
Four occupants of a speeding car were killed instantly when it veered off U S Highway 90 near Mobile and struck a power line pole. A fifth passenger escaped. Prowler Chased By Special Cop From His Home
Clearwater Florida August 24 police sought an unidentified prowler for an attempted assault on a young wife of a special city police officer in Pinellas County. Guilty Plea Entered in One Morgan County Case
One case heard in Morgan County Court Tuesday morning, George McCain pleaded guilty to violation of prohibition law. Seventeen other cases were scheduled. nine defendants failed to appear and were rearrested, five cases were not pressed, and three continued. McCain fined five dollars plus costs or 95 days. In Talladega Alabama Aug 4 7 the Ku Klux Klan paraded through streets without incident and burned a large cross at a road junction about a mile from town. Police Chief Willis Dean called the parade orderly and it lasted nearly an hour with cars in groups. Birmingham News reporter R E Hogan observed the scene but was ignored by hooded participants.

Registration opens August 30 for Morgan County men
Morgan county men aged 18 to 25 must register with Selective Service starting Monday August 30 1948 through September 18 1948. Registration will be at Local Board 52 Decatur on the courthouse annex second floor with Red Cross room in use. Voluntary workers will assist registrants and the register covers the entire eligible bracket including veterans and reservists. Alabama expects over a quarter million registrants with less than one percent called for training in the first year. The 17 day registration period includes days for older age groups. First Morgan Bale Ginned at Producers Gin
The first bale of Morgan county cotton from the new crop was ginned yesterday at Producers gin. It was grown by Allen Davis a well known farmer on the Joe Wheeler highway near Decatur. The bale weighed 494 pounds and was DPL 14. A second DPL bale from Adley Grantland of Decatur was also brought in. Grantland called his DPL 15 cotton the best on his place.
