Coroner Bev T. Howell announced a verdict of death by own action in the death of 43 year old Mrs. Lorene Fischer Gibson. She reportedly stepped into the path of a freight train in Hart selle on Friday afternoon. Mrs. Gibson was a former Hartselle school teacher and had been ill in recent months. Funeral services were held Sunday.
Roswell New Mexico where Ross L. Malone Sr. died at home on Tuesday after a long residence in the West. Funeral services are set for Thursday in Roswell. He was a brother of the late Charles E. and Baynard L. Malone of Decatur.
Washington reports that the House Un American Activities Committee said it cannot locate a freelance writer using the name George Crosley. Former official Alger Hiss testified in New York that he knew Whittaker Chambers, denying prewar Red activity and acknowledging acquaintance under another name. Committee investigators pursue corroboration while Nixon questions witnesses. Hiss, head of the Carnegie Foundation for International Peace, reiterates he is not a communist.
City Attorney John A. Caddell will oversee deed signing Friday at 10 30 A M to finalize the 66 350 purchase of Pryor field for a municipal airport north of Decatur on Highway 31. Officials from Decatur Morgan county Athens and Limestone county with CAA representatives attend. The airport covers 200 acres and will fund a 107 runway plan.
Moscow reports indicate four power talks on Germany are nearing conclusion. A high level U S Britain and France envoys may meet again this week with the Soviet Molotov amid guarded optimism and no final terms or published agreement promised.

Mary Fuller Frazier of Philadelphia died August 6 at 83 leaving almost all of her vast estate to Perryopolis for public improvements. Estimates place the legacy at five to ten million dollars with $210000 left to others. The fortune stems from 1918 1934 inheritances and connections to the Fuller and Frazier families.
Washington August reports say President Truman invoked the Taft-Hartley emergency to avert an AFL International Longshoremen's Association strike set for Saturday midnight. The shutdown would halt most shipping from Portland Maine to Hampton Roads Virginia, including Europe bound Marshall plan shipments. An inquiry board led by Saul Wallen Joseph Miller and Julius Cass was named to report by Friday, with court action possible to stop the strike once the report is received.
Glenn Mitchell of Hartselle owned a Bethel Road home burned to the ground early today. Firemen were called about 1 a.m. cause undetermined. The house, recently purchased and being remodeled, was occupied by Murphy Slate before Saturday. Mitchell owns the nearby ice cream plant. damage not yet estimated.
In Mobile on August 18 1948 brothers I M Reed aged 67 and Enoch Reed aged 65 from Russellville Alga reunited after 27 years. Enoch arrived unannounced aboard a freighter from Nova Scotia and the siblings last saw each other in Danville Arkansas in 1921.
Decatur residents vote 18 to 7 to annex a 100 acre area near the Southern city limits. 31 qualified voters participated at Hart's store in Fairview. This follows a July 20 annexation of a 12 acre tract in the Country Club district. A third annexation vote, for six blocks by West Decatur, is planned for September 14.
Decatur businessfolk toured Danville farms to study industry roots in agriculture. Charlie Hardwick welcomed visitors and reviewed Decatur businesses. Sites included Guhl Maddox’s dairy project, A Z Craze’s 542 acres with corn and cotton gains, John Cooper’s mechanized hay farming, F J Pickens’ alfalfa hog operation, and James Tomlinson’s dairy and crops.
City Clerk Joe Pettey announced extra hours for municipal race candidates to qualify. Papers will be accepted up to midnight August 21 after office hours, as city hall closes at noon on Saturday.
Secretary Marshall stated that evidence sent to the State Department does not support Soviet charges against U S authorities over the New York refuge teacher case. He noted a formal reply will be issued within 24 hours and that one teacher, Mrs Oksana Kosenkina, injured after leaping from a Soviet consulate window, is in a New York hospital. The three teachers seek asylum in the United States.
Stockholm reports Lydia Makharova, a 19 year old described as a music prodigy, identified by Dagens Nyheter as the “Swedish Kosenkina” and refusing to return to Russia. The case sparks a public sensation in Sweden and echoes a separate Soviet teacher leap incident in New York last week.
