Partly cloudy outlook with gentle to moderate northerly winds on the coast. Decatur market reports middling at 31.75 and strict low at 30.75 at noon. Temperatures ranged to 79 high and 65 low. Residents visit relatives in Louisville Kalamazoo and Hot Springs while others attend church events and a Havana Cuba vacation note appears.
Dr J S Snoddy newly named member of the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board paid 31 in police court Birmingham for smoking in bed in a city hotel. Inspector Rosenfeld found smoke and a burned mattress in the room. He was fined 25 for smoking plus 3 court costs and 3 for failure to appear.
About 60 persons were injured when ten cars of the Great Northern Westbound Oriental Limited derailed near Rugby North Dakota. Thirty five were taken to a hospital with two in critical condition. 25 received first aid at the scene. The derailment left three coaches sleepers and a diner off the tracks while eight cars at the rear stayed on. Passengers and crews noted slow speed, with estimates around 45 miles an hour. The train had left St. Paul for Seattle Monday morning.
Floyd Smith, manager of local the atres, says a Decatur drive-in depends on locating a suitable 800 by 800 foot lot on highway 31 to seat 550 to 650 cars. Crescent Amusement of Nashville, operator of the Princess, Roxy and Capitol, has asked the U S district court for permission to build several theatres including a Decatur drive-in. A Clarksville drive-in is also under consideration.
Florida police launched a wide manhunt for two suspects in the seaside rape and murder of Mary Hucks of East Point Georgia and the slaying of her male companion near an Atlantic beach. Investigators questioned four white youths and two Negroes as leads pointed to two men seen near a shooting gallery and a bloodstained man at Daytona Beach.
The 10th candidate for alderman in the September 20 municipal election qualified this morning at the city clerk’s office. A. Strane of 111 Eighth Avenue joins mayoral hopefuls and four other council seats in the race. Incumbent Mayor H. R. Summer faces Tom Harrison while Strane joins Nathan Pryor Clifford H. Odom C. B. Waite Clyde B. Smith and incumbents Rutledge Thomas Russell Speake Knox McRae A. C. Dillegay Ernest Poole for alderman seats.
President Truman signed the anti inflation bill into law while blasting lawmakers for a “feeble response” to rising living costs. The bill imposes time payment limits and bank reserve rules with details and effective dates to be set by the Federal Reserve Board this week.
An extensive search is under way for LeRoy Baskin a 25 year old convict who escaped from a state camp driving a dump truck. He was last seen at 7 15 AM wearing a yellow complexion five foot six and 155 pounds. Baskin has connections in Chattanooga Birmingham and Selma and may have been contacting women there. Officials would not disclose charges or further details.
Twelve year old Constance May of Vinemont sustained a bruised shoulder when a southbound car carrying her and Rev Floyd May overturned on Highway 31 about three miles north of Cullman. The driver, George Tillery, attempted a pass and the collision forced May to brake causing the vehicle to overturn. Constance was treated at Cullman hospital and released.
Fourteen of 31 eligible voters in a 100 acre area south of Decatur cast ballots at Hart's store Fairview noon today. The election, triggered by a petition, asks if the area should join the city. A separate annexation vote for a West Decatur section with 100 homes is set for September 14. A 112 acre tract in the Country Club area was recently incorporated.
Mrs Dolores Decossio of Havana Cuba is headache free for the first time in 47 years after a Birmingham surgeon operated last week. The doctor removed a tangled group of blood vessels that traced the pain since she was 15.
Decatur Transit president says service expansion to Fairview is not financially feasible for now, though not ruling out future trips. Council funds curb repairs and delays insurance decision until September after figures show per trip wages exceed losses, with options like transfers and one more morning trip discussed.
Coroner J Grady Moss ruled death a self inflicted gunshot by Ruth Alexander 24 of Holly Pond. She died en route to hospital after shooting herself at home in ill health for months. Funeral set at Holly Pond church with Rev Lee Franklin officiating. Survived by parents Mr and Mrs W Alexander and sister Mrs Anetta Turner of Birmingham.
Governor J. Strom Thurmond told reporters at a Columbia news conference that he is deeply sincere in his states rights presidential bid. He said he fights for the American people and the South, regardless of opposition from major newspapers.
In Montgomery on Aug 17 Alabama Democrats loyal to President Truman formed the Alabama Branch Of The National Democratic Party and agreed to propose pro Truman electors in November but did not name candidates. They plan another meeting in Birmingham Aug 28 to finalize a slate while state rights electors said they would not oppose the Truman effort.
Tennessee Valley Co operative Seed plant reports 600 to 700 dress print sacks missing. Police Chief J B Whitmire says sacks valued at 40 cents wholesale. Initial loss about 350 sacks Sunday with more missing Monday. Citizens who bought these sacks urged to contact police headquarters.
Ed Donauer, about 40, improved at Cullman hospital with no arrests yet. Floyd Townsend and C James Willingham, both described as Negroes, were held or treated in Decatur for related stabbing cases. Bernice Brown remained out on bond after an assault charge tied to the Bailey stabbing. John Crawford, another Negro, served time on a street stabbing record. Donatier was stabbed in the stomach near Cullman Saturday afternoon.
Limestone county's first bale of cotton was ginned Friday the thirteenth at Beddingfield Richardson Gin west of Athens. Malcolm R. McCormack sold the bale on the Athens market Monday for 536.10 dollars, including premiums from Athens businessmen, making the market price 95 cents per pound. The 564 pound bale was grown on the Bruce Nelson farm at Brown's Ferry. this marks the fifth consecutive year McCormack has brought in Limestone's first bale.
In Frankfurt Ba via Sandhof lake a duck shot by Lt Ernest G Strom of Saginaw Minn caused his death as he swam to recover it. Strom, an American Army lieutenant, drowned after getting entangled in underwater weeds.
The Telegraf reports Russians sealed off part of the British Soviet border near Salzwedel in North Germany and placed rocket guns there. Heavy artillery and tank columns were seen. trenches and a security border are being built as Molotov held talks with Western diplomats.
Memorial hospital disclosed Babe Ruth died from cancer that began in the nasopharynx and spread to the neck. He was treated with X rays and radium at Memorial, with no special drugs or chemicals used to control the tumor. Doctors cited paralysis of nerves affecting the throat and hoarseness as part of his decline.
Washington Aug. 17 The House American activities committee faces a dispute over a leak after Alger Hiss testified at a closed session. A member vows to seek an investigation into oath violations as papers publish details. The panel plans a Sept. 7 public hearing and a face-to-face with Hiss and Whittaker Chambers.
Fitzwilliam New Hampshire report states Harry Dexter White aged 56 died yesterday in town. A former assistant Secretary of the Treasury and long time monetary expert, he faced questions amid a congressional probe into communist spy rings. White denied the accusations.
