Washington dispatch reports after a White House meeting President Truman and congressional leaders said no immediate request for more defense funds. They did not rule out later action as Korea's war continues. In a Chicago case dated Aug 14 a 36 year old father of three admitted the 1948 kidnapping and sex assault of 10 year old Roberta Rinearson near La Grange. State's Attorney Boyle called the crime solved after a lie detector exam revealed details including choking and attempts to stifle screams.
Mobile, Aug 14. 4%-Director R R Wade of the Alabama Labor Department returned to Mobile to check on the city bus strike. He planned to confer with Mobile City Lines representatives and the AFL Bus Drivers Union during the day but gave no hint of a new settlement plan.
Former National Guardsmen had their first Army meal at noon today in Why Not cafe. They dined in two shifts 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. lunch menu included hamburger steak creamed potatoes salad peas iced tea cobbler and hot rolls. Supper will feature breaded pork chops potatoes salad green limas peas dessert milk and rolls. They plan to depart for Camp Campbell Ky between August 25 and 30 by motor convoy. Local overnight passes given to town residents. others stay at armory. Officers dine with troops in the private dining room and main dining room back.
In Montgomery Alabama on August 14 Police Chief Goodwyn J Ruppenthal ordered an official inquiry into the fatal wounding of Hilliard Brooks 25 by a patrolman M E Mills Brooks was shot in the stomach on a crowded downtown street Saturday afternoon he died yesterday Mills says Brooks resisted arrest on a disturbance charge and the chief said no action would be taken until the police board questions witnesses and reviews the case.
Fresh from a weekend vacation Alabama legislators return to work to consider a compromise to halt Gov. James E. Folsom's series of special sessions. A resolution to set up a study committee on reapportionment and recess the body awaits a date for reporting and reconvening. The house approved Oct 3, the senate amended to Oct 10. The November election ends this legislature's term. Gov. Folsom did not state opposition to the senate date.
