LAFAYETTE Ga Aug 11 A local chiropractor Dr R T Langley is charged with handcuffing two men to a chair for four hours to collect a debt. He denies the claim saying the men volunteered and later sought to be restrained to obtain funds. Bond set at 1200 on two assault and two false imprisonment counts. Witnesses testified the borrowers Ray and Dewey Marks textile workers borrowed 25 dollars and offered their car as security. Langley learned a mortgage already existed on the auto.
The Decatur City Council and Municipal Utilities Board heard bids for a natural gas distribution system. C. E. Adams and Company of Birmingham offered the apparent low bid of 742,782.48, about six percent above the engineer’s estimate, for 2,250 domestic outlets and 16 industrial connections. The board recommended acceptance and a 1.5 million revenue bond issue to back the project, with 1.05 million sold and .45 million reserved for expansion. Action is set for August 15 alongside Huntsville’s bid decisions.
A 64 year old textile worker C L Arrant killed a young redheaded woman identified as Dorothy Jane Williams of Phenix City Alabama and then shot himself. A coroner's jury ruled murder and death by his own action. The bodies were found in a Columbus area tourist motel about 14 miles north of Columbus. Mrs Williams had been a former resident of Dothan Alabama and was nicknamed Cherry. The couple were driven to the motel by a taxi driver around midnight. the man was to be picked up at 4 AM.
A 36 year old Trinity farmer was arrested and placed in custody on accusations of violating parole. Authorities did not release further details pending formal charges or a court appearance.
President Truman will not push universal military training UMT this session though still strongly in favor. Defense needs for Korea and mounting defense costs lead officials to withhold pursuit. A Defense Department aide said a UMT bill is being drafted and could be sent to Congress soon.
Crown Prince Baudoin was proclaimed ruler of Belgium in a parliament oath after the senate and chamber approved transferring King Leopold III's powers. The vote was 349 to eight abstentions, amid security amid unrest and a smoke bomb incident as the prince took the oath.
Morgan county teachers in service leaders and county supervisors and principals will meet at 2 P M today at Woodalls. They will discuss plans for a three day pre school program beginning Wednesday at Hartselle and organize faculties for the local school study program.

Over 50 million taxpayers would be affected, with some brackets up to 20 percent higher. A $1.5 billion corporate tax rise was also approved, aiming for a $5 billion yearly revenue rise. The House backed wage price controls empowering President Truman, who signaled mobilization powers may not be needed yet. The bill also enables defense materials priority, plant requisition, and a $2 billion loan program to boost defense production. The House quickly passed a similar measure and a final Senate vote could come next Tue or Wed.
Washington advisory from the armed forces asks press and radio to refrain from mentioning alerts or movements of troops in training across the United States. The Army announced it will activate 7,862 reserve captains and lieutenants not in organized reserve units, all men, by Oct. 6 for 21 months. By Associated Press strikes by bus drivers crippled traffic in New York and St Louis. AFL painters walking out at the Oak Ridge atomic plant threatened to slow government completion. About 100000 riders were affected in New York as more drivers joined the walkout. They rejected CIO Transport Workers Union head Michael J Quill's plea to return to work.
In Strasbourg, Churchill urged immediate creation of a unified European army to deter Soviet aggression. He argued the West has about two years breathing space and insisted NATO allies include the United States Britain and Canada in a strong defensive front. He welcomed West German delegates and urged France to revive its army while warning against overreliance on material dominance.
Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal Tom Hall joined Fire Chief Fled Elkins in investigating a fire that heavily damaged a Sycamore and Vine Streets photography studio on July 18. They seek public help to identify two men seen fleeing before the alarm. Neighbors reported the blaze after Margaret Sandifer, who lived nearby, heard noises and saw two men dash past as she alerted authorities at city hall but a Union Station crossing train blocked her path. The studio belonged to Jack Gunter, an orderly at Decatur General Hospital, who was elsewhere visiting friends at Flint Sanatorium when the fire started.
