In Montgomery Alabama August 10 1947 the Alabama House adjourned until Monday ending hopes for an early compromise to end the special session. Anti reapportionment senators blocked action despite a plan for a recess to October 3 for a joint committee to draft a agreeable reapportionment bill. Governor James E Folsom would suspend his calls during the pause. Senate quorum issues and a journal reading delayed the session before adjournment.
U S troops drove 13 miles toward Chinju and trapped possibly 1,000 enemy troops, marking the war's biggest single day gain for American forces. Chinjubase teetered as North Koreans neared a US fighter base near Pohang, while another advance threatened Taegu. Reds attacked along the Northern front, with a major bridgehead at Naktong river near Taegu held, and another near Taegu reportedly wiped out. AP correspondent Hal Boyle noted Reds used mountainous terrain to shield from naval fire as they pushed from Yongdok toward Pohang.
Decatur’s bid for a 20,000 population is under review by the Census Bureau in Washington. Preliminary figures show Decatur 121 short of 20,000, with Senator John Sparkman stating officials are checking supervisor Grisham’s report as the process continues.
Pro pamphlets denouncing a city anti communist ordinance were found on porches along Formwall Street and Georgia Avenue in Atlanta. The sheets, signed by the communist party of Atlanta, warn residents the measure would empower police to jail people for talking with a communist at home or by phone. They accuse Bull Connor of Birmingham, Alabama, of suppressing white workers votes.
Six of seven defendants in Lawrence circuit court criminal division requested probation after pleas of guilty were entered and one defendant was found guilty. Ernest Shelton, circuit clerk, lists Clarence Clay distilling Buck Walker grand larceny Tootsie McGehee assault with intent to murder Sam Stewart assault with a weapon and Lyndon Jeffreys two charges of grand larceny among those entering pleas. President Truman said he is satisfied with General Douglas MacArthur’s conduct as Far East commander and he has not met anyone who supports appeasement in Asia. He noted agreement with MacArthur on policy and avoided comment on the Formosa trip amid growing controversy.
H L Spencer vice president of Norge division Borg-Warner visited Decatur to tour the Wolverine Tube plant and Wilson and Wheeler dams. He praised TVA saying the true character of TVA becomes clear from its benefits to people and the nation. Spencer favored the Souths climate lower maintenance costs and opportunities for recreation noting the regions advantages over northern states.
Harold Carter 61, assistant cashier at Morgan County National Bank, died Wednesday night at Baugh Wiley clinic after months of illness. He had worked in banking since 1920 and lived at 416 East Moulton Street. Funeral at his residence Friday at 4 pm with Rev. O E Burton, interment Athens cemetery. Brown directing. pallbearers named. Survived by wife, mother Mrs Cora Carter of Norfolk, sister Mrs Jess Crane of Norfolk, two nieces and two nephews. Born in Fitzpatrick Alabama, he lived in Decatur 35 years and was active in Central Baptist church, American Legion, Civitan, and other civic groups.
President Truman could gain discretionary control over wages prices rationing and credit as a House vote nears the Senate debate. GOP and some Southern Democrats push to narrow credit authority to real estate and consumer loans with business loans exempted. Amendments seek to limit real estate credit and deny control of commodity speculation while most Democrats resist.
The senate finance committee unanimously endorsed President Truman's plan for a 1.5 billion dollar annual rise in corporate taxes raising the top rate from 38 to 45 percent. The higher rate would start July 1 1950 and apply to 1950 corporate income only in part of the proposal aimed at funding Korea era defense. An excess profits tax was signaled as forthcoming in Truman's broader five billion dollar tax package.
The measure, while mirroring the President's acceptable framework, grants discretionary powers to manage war born inflation. It allows rationing, prioritization of scarce materials for defense, government requisitions with compensation, up to 2 billion in loans to spur production, and wage and price ceilings adjustable by the President. Washington August 10 defense officials told the Senate Armed Services Committee a universal military training plan for youths likely 18 and 19 is under intensive study and could reach Congress soon. Admiral Houser said details were unavailable while lawmakers considered extending service options beyond existing draft and guard calls. The panel also debated suspending draft act provisions that allow 18 year olds to volunteer for one year to avoid 19 year olds serving 21 months overseas.
Senate leaders from both parties pursue tougher home front security amid disputes over a Mundt Ferguson Johnston bill to require communist and front organizations to register with the government and to bar suspected subversives from the United States. The chamber advanced three internal security measures and prepared for a floor clash pending formal agreement on policy.
American forces east of Chinju formed a noose around at least 1000 trapped communists while Marine patrols entered Kosong on a southward thrust. The gains mark the greatest advance of the Southern offensive as units converged from west toward Chinju and northwest along coastal routes.
An elderly Iowa woman, Ada C. Parks, 60s, was strangled in her sleeping berth on the Southern Pacific Golden State Limited near Bisbee while resisting a rape attempt. Harold T. Lantz, 28, a discharged Tucson railroad employee, confessed after a brief pursuit. The murder occurred around 4 a.m. as the eastbound train traveled.
Twelve more cases of infantile paralysis were reported in Alabama last week, bringing the year's total to 125. Eighteen were recorded week before last. Three cases were in Jefferson county, Butler and Marshall had two each, and Bibb Mobile Montgomery Russell and Sumter had one apiece.
Washington August 10 The White House presses a new bid to avert a rail strike amid the Korean crisis. Union leaders seek a 40 hour week with full pay, while John R Steelman and railroad reps plus the National Mediation Board meet for a second day.
A nine year old boy described as a "bad boy" was arrested for burglary by Officers Charles Smith and Ernest Bowman. He admitted entering Jack Sherman's Grocery, found $10.48 on him, with about $20 missing from the cash drawer. He was turned over to the Welfare Department under supervision due to age.
