Cloudy with scattered showers and coast winds. Decatur reports a high of 84 and low of 67. Local births, hospital notes, a rabies testing update, hospitalizations, and church revivals are listed alongside stadium payment reminders and city court cases.
A public hearing is scheduled for 2 P M before the City Council on the paving of Seventh Street S between 18th and 19th Avenues E Citizens objecting to the project will be heard The council is also expected to call the September 20 municipal election The meeting will be at the city hall on Railroad Street.
Berlin Aug 9 The British licensed Telegraf says Russians are digging trenches and mounting weapons along the border between the Soviet occupation zone and Western Germany. US and German officials deny confirmation while noting strengthened border guards and trenches to curb illegal traffic. a German source says workers were pressed into service and warned not to speak.
U S Ambassador Walter Bedell Smith led British envoy Frank Roberts and French Ambassador Yves Chataigneau into the Kremlin for their third talks in a week. The trio planned a meeting with Foreign Minister Molotov regarding the Berlin blockade and broader East West tensions. Smith had met Roberts earlier and then joined Molotov and Stalin in recent discussions.
Reported Russian efforts to fortify border installations near Berlin prompted American officials to note increased watch towers fencing and road barricades. While unconfirmed, officials said the border tightened months ago reducing German exits to the American zone, with about 10 000 people per month seeking to move.

Revocation of probation will be considered for Frank Swinney negro placed on probation in 1947 for grand larceny.
The American Legion Auxiliary begins a meatless week in protest of high prices with 108 local members cooperating with Montgomery Post 2. Auxiliary president Mrs Garland Roberts was unavailable for comment.
Police search for four men who escaped from city jail by sawing a hole in a back window shortly after midnight. Escapees Joseph Harmel Edward Barber Andrew Kirby and William Campbell face jail breaking and various charges. Harmel spotted on a bridge prompted the alert.
A 50-year-old grandmother and a 30-year-old aunt of two Roberts children are confined at Bryce Hospital in Tuscaloosa for mental evaluation after seizure by Sheriff C B Humphrey. Lou Roberts mother of two month old Gurney Franklin and five year old Alma Jean had commitment papers signed, while Jana Hoog Green and Nell Green were taken into custody. Alma Jean placed in a foster home. Gurney Franklin recovering at General Hospital after malnutrition and a broken collar bone. Authorities seek Lou Roberts.
The White House awaits Maurice Tobin's decision on becoming Labor Secretary. Ross said Tobin, former Massachusetts governor and Boston mayor, will talk with President Truman in Washington. A recess appointment is possible if Tobin accepts due to Senate inaction.
Birmingham Gas Co announces plans for a two story operating and service center in Birmingham. The building will be acquired on completion by Iran Life Insurance Co which will lease it to Birmingham Gas.
Chief J B Whitmire said this morning police have no information to shed light on the burning of two crosses Friday night near negro areas in Decatur. One cross burned at about 1130 p m on a hillside near a black residential section in the City Cemetery area. The other was lit earlier at East End Negro Park near the municipal playground.
The Agriculture Department projects a 1948 cotton crop of 15,169,000 bales, the seventh largest on record, with an indicated yield of 313.5 pounds per acre. The forecast surpasses last year by 3,318,000 bales and exceeds the ten year average by 3,155,000 bales, driven by favorable growing conditions and more fertilizer use. Prices fell in New Orleans and New York on the forecast, and 258,928 running bales had been ginned by Aug 1.
O H McRight resigns from the Alabama state liquor control board with Gov James E Folsom appointing Dr J S Snoddy of Russellville to succeed him Snoddy had entered the Democratic primary for Congress from the 7th district but withdrew due to ill health The resignation was announced at a board meeting and McRight had previously attempted to resign earlier in his tenure
Two Limestone County men, Sol Mack Malone and George E. Gordon, were killed in a dawn shooting eight miles southeast of Athens on Cambridge Lane. Coroner Grigsby Griffis said Malone had been with Hazel Robinson, the woman at the center of the quarrel, and that Gordon fired first, then Malone returned fire as he lay dying.
Elliott denies plans to seek mayor or alderman in the September 20 municipal election. H R Summey intends re election, and five aldermen will be chosen. Red Williams declines comment on candidate rumors in the race.

Graveside funeral services were held for the infant son of Mr and Mrs Tom Owen of Center at Hartselle cemetery with Rev Thomas V Hatchett officiating Peck's directing The infant died Sunday at 830 AM at the parents home The mother is the former Miss Ruby Hodges of Hartselle Survivors include the parents and one sister Mary Pruitt Owen
Atlanta police arrested Thomas Pierce and Clarence Davis for disorderly conduct after pursuing David Evans a 16 year old Negro youth into the heart of the Negro sector. Officers said Pierce and Davis warned Evans to stay away and alleged he whistled at children. Evans was bound over to the grand jury on a separate misdemeanor charge and was free on $500 bond.
Washington dispatch reports President Truman silent on strategy for challenging the 80th Congress. White House aides expect him to sign the housing and anti inflation bills but criticize them as inadequate. Ross notes the president’s known attitude while bills move through routine departmental review and final action is awaited.
Detroit Aug 9 Sen Ferguson refused to pursue impeachment of President Truman. He said he would not press impeachment and that the American citizen would remove Truman in the presidential election. Ferguson had cited an iron curtain policy in a Senate floor remark over loyalty records.
Senator Hatch says the measures are inadequate but an advance over now and hopes the President signs them. Senator Lucas says Truman will be compelled to sign and explain their limits. Party members expect sharp language from Truman criticizing Republicans for withholding price, wage, and rationing controls to curb living costs.
William O. Adair 21 a Mt Moriah area farmer was shot three times by his brother in law Oscar Wallace Terry about 5 PM in front of relatives home. Coroner J H Highsmith said Adair died instantly and Terry surrendered without resistance. Sheriff G D Byars said charges were to be filed. Funeral services were set for 3 PM at Jones directing and Adair is survived by his widow and four children.
W H Jenkins former Greensboro Alabama principal accepts principalship of Decatur junior high school. He replaces L W Yates who resigns to become city superintendent of schools at Cullman. Jenkins arrives about August 15 and holds AB from Birmingham Southern and MA from Emory University. He succeeds W R Riley at junior high who becomes principal at Decatur senior high.
Panama reports high level officials allege Arnulfo Arias Madrid plans an armed invasion from Costa Rica with Costa Rican army backing. Claims describe mercenaries poised at Puerto Armuelles while Arias travels to San Jose via Colombia. Police clamp down on his party as Crespo meets Figueres and Simmons heads to Managua.
U S Senator J Howard McGrath says President Truman will campaign in the South for his re election starting in September. He notes Truman will address crowds on courthouse steps public squares and railroad stations while high prices will be a major issue for the Democratic campaign.
Frank P Burton Jr of Stuart, fifth district chairman for the Young Democratic Clubs of Virginia, launches a states rights club to back the Thurmond Wright ticket. Burton and Cloyd Martin resign in protest as Young Democrats virtually endorse Truman civil rights program after a filibuster. Burton reports a favorable response from Patrick county supporters.

Elizabeth Bentley testifies Perlo led one of two official spy groups, while Rep Mundt seeks subpoenas for Russian teachers in New York tied to UN delegation..perlo invokes constitutional grounds to refuse certain questions.
Miss Elizabeth Houston longtime Lafayette Street teacher was elected principal of Joe Wheeler school after Mrs Thomas Harvey resigned. Houston, president of the Decatur Teachers Association, recently returned from Cleveland where she attended the National Education Association convention.
