Allied envoys in Moscow expect a call from Molotov today or tomorrow to resume East West talks over Germany. After meetings with Stalin, Moscow may see a return to negotiations on broader European issues. A British source notes progress but Russia objects to concrete proposals, possibly tied to lifting the Berlin blockade. The line into Berlin records 666 supply flights despite rain as Danube talks in Belgrade pledge rejection of any Soviet monopoly.
At least 108 families will eat no meat this week in a protest against high prices. Spokesmen for the local American Legion Auxiliary Post 15 said the unit announced the project in cooperation with a Montgomery American Legion resolution.
Marcus Floyd Traffansted 21 of Gadsden is held on false pretense charges after attempting to pass three bad checks in Decatur and admitting two worthless checks in Gadsden last week. He was arrested at the Decatur Shoe Store after officials grew suspicious of the checks. He had served seven months previously for issuing bad checks at Kilby prison. He told investigators he bought clothing in Gadsden with an 83 dollar check and gave a 40.75 dollar check for a radio at Economy Auto.
T E Williams announced the 1948 loan bases for eight North Alabama counties after discussions with the Commodity Credit Corporation. Bases range from 30.81 to 31.08 cents per pound, calculated from parity and adjustments for grade differences.
Grady J. Long of Hartselle was named chairman of Morgan County Selective Service Board at a courthouse Annex meeting attended by Howard M. Fowler of Lacey's Spring and Thomas D. Brooks of Decatur. Mrs. Mattie W. Tolleson of Decatur was chosen clerk. The board expects 4000 to 5000 registrants aged 18 to 25 between August 30 and September 15. Registration time and site to be announced. volunteers will be sought to assist. All board members are war veterans.
Fire officials investigated two arson style crosses lit Friday night near a cemetery and East End Negro park in Decatur. The larger cross measured about 26 by 24 feet and burned for 15 minutes, while a smaller rag cross stood at the East End park. Police found no evidence linking the acts to the Ku Klux Klan as children observed suspects flee in a car.
The dog Sgt Stand By, longtime mascot for a 15th Air Force bomber crew, was found dying at 415 Johnston after being poisoned. Owned by E. W. Strother Jr. and his brother Kenneth, the veteran had served in Italy and Southern Germany and lived a full life before being betrayed by a countryman.
Bobby Golden and Chalmers Duke Riley, both of Decatur, were in a three vehicle crash en route to Ft. Benning Georgia for National Guard summer training. Bobby drove a jeep carrying a poumee and sustained minor injuries.
South Carolina pledged its 28 electoral votes to the Thurmond Wright ticket after a mail poll of 46 committee members. The committee overwhelmingly endorsed the Southern states rights ticket, aligning with Mississippi and Alabama which have 20 votes combined. The state convention instructed electors to oppose Truman and to nominate Thurmond for President at the national convention.
Dallas store owner J. Hugh Campbell laments a 3000 percent rise in Confederate flag sales linked to the Dixiecrat movement against President Truman. He notes orders jumped from a few yearly inquiries to multiple daily requests as customers grow eager and frustrated by delays.
Baskin notes the executive committee and state convention will bind electors to support the Thurmond Wright ticket though names are not yet chosen. The committee will pick eight electoral college nominees as each party furnishes its own ballots for the general election. Before any vote for President Truman, a pledging slate must be offered.
Two new parties in North Carolina plan court tests challenging the state election board rules on how infant parties may get on the general election ballot. The pro Wallace progressives and the anti Truman states rights democrats contend the 90 day petition rule is required before the November 2 election.
Gessner T. McCorvey of Mobile was chosen to lead the Alabama Bar Association and its stance endorses states rights. The resolution backs government by state sovereignty over matters not granted to the federal government, including voter qualifications segregation and choice of associates and employees.
A hearing on James Lang's motion for a new trial is scheduled for September 20 at 10 a.m. before Circuit Judge Newton B. Powell. Lang, sentenced to 99 years for second degree murder in the Christine Haynie case, seeks relief on 27 grounds alleging legal errors and improper evidence.
Slim Thomas will be tried again for grand larceny at the next term of circuit court after a second mistrial. Jurors failed to reach a verdict Friday afternoon in Decatur. Circuit Judge Newton B Powell ordered a mistrial after the panel could not agree. The theft involved chalk novelties from a tent owned by Bob Lakey on Highway 31 South of Decatur. Thomas had a prior mistrial July 23 with one juror voting for acquittal.
The U S House committee revealed Alexander Koral as the mystery witness in the wartime Red spy ring inquiry. Rep Mundt said Koral was intended to lead to another key witness, with next week expected to bring further hearings on Russia’s wartime materials and A bomb project links.
Montgomery reports a marriage downturn with 71 weddings per day in June, up nearly 60 percent from January. Despite 2 17 couples wed in June, this is less than half of last year’s June total. Health Department vital statistics show 901 marriages in the first six months.
Benton Tennessee endured a tense night as National Guard and highway patrol protected the town after election violence left three dead and four wounded. Edwin Shearer, 32, died in a North Carolina hospital from wounds from the ambush near a Polk county polling place. Donald Sands, 28, was killed, and Ernest Loudermilk was found shot. Authorities announced charges of suspicion of murder against J Burton Brown of Los Angeles as the investigation continued under Safety Commissioner Lynn Bomar.
Athens college seeks 50 000 from Limestone county and the Decatur district of the Methodist church to fund repairs and strengthen accreditation efforts with a campaign begun in Limestone county. About 125 educators heard the appeal at a Saturday barbecue, with Limestone county asked to raise 25 000 and the Decatur district 25 000. Scholarships will be offered to juniors and seniors to boost participation, while funds aim to redecorate Founder’s hall McCandless hall and related facilities. Dr A Nabors stressed unity beyond denominational lines as enrollment reaches 152.
Congress rewrote much of President Truman’s anti inflation and housing plans adjourning until December 31. The Senate blocked rationing powers and the House approved two inflation curb measures while backing a housing bill lacking federal subsidies. A $65 million UN loan was approved for Serene headquarters in Newark.
