Weather outlook for today shows a high of 77 and a low of 60 with a fair to partly cloudy afternoon and scattered showers in the far south. The Decatur cotton market reports middling at 32.75 and strict low at 31.25.
MOBILE August 6 A construction worker is credited with likely saving 3 year old David Holmes who touched a live wire while crawling under a house for his dog. Dewey Godwin supervising roof repairs nearby pulled the boy from the wire and saved his life.
Rep. MacDowell says 1420 pounds of uranium were sent to Russia in 1945, in addition to 1300 pounds in 1943, as part of wartime shipments. Senate hearings pause as Ferguson cites lack of FBI records from Clark, while Truman denounces the probe as a red herring and the loyalty program remains under sealed investigations.
Chicago July 6 The head of the National Association of Retail Meat Dealers forecasts a sharp break in retail meat prices within ten days to two weeks. James Elliott of Minneapolis, here for the association's annual convention, cites talks with packers producers and dealers and says higher livestock receipts and consumer price trends will spur the drop.

Widows and each parent receive insignia at no cost. other relatives may buy at about 1.50. Application blanks are at Bibb’s office. delivery about 90 days after order. Law penalties apply to unauthorized wear. rights verified by records.
Funeral services set for Capt James W Lanier 31 son of Mr and Mrs W M Lanier 214 E Walnut St. His body arrives from Memphis at 210 pm today with a Sunday 4 pm service at First Baptist Church conducted by Rev J C Williams. Interment in City Cemetery with VFW posts graveside rites. Lanier killed in action January 12 1945 en route to Luzon Philippines after enlisting November 1942. He is survived by his parents two sisters and five brothers.
Gov Fielding L Wright and Mississippi states righters plan a special train to Houston for the rally next Wednesday. Wright will formally accept the Vice Presidential nomination, joined by Gov J Strom Thurmond who will receive the Presidential nod. About 500 Mississippians travel. the trip includes a layover in New Orleans for Tuesday dinner and returns starting Wednesday night.
The body of Edward D. Ferguson, 48, Mobile, Alabama, recovered about 15 miles below Memphis on the Mississippi River. He had drowned Tuesday while working at the U S engineer depot at West Memphis Arkansas.
Dr. L R Murphree county health officer and Mrs Elizabeth Lamon plan four weeks of county clinics starting Monday. They will provide whooping cough and diphtheria shots smallpox vaccines tuberculin tests and typhoid shots. Schedule lists clinics at West Center Grove Jones Hartselle Round Top Lebanon Windis Massey Andrews Penn Flint Cedar Lake Moulton Heights Pleasant Hill Cedar Creek Rock Creek and more with weekly shots and annual typhoid doses.
The Senate passed a compromise housing bill aimed at speeding small home building, voting 48 to 36 to substitute it for the Taft Ellender Wagner housing measure. The action followed changes in anti inflation provisions and shifts in reserve requirements, with Truman seeking higher rates. See HOUSING on Page 2.
Grandmother Jana Hood Green and aunt Nell Green, both held in Morgan County jail, await transfer to Bryce Hospital for mental treatment. mother Mattie Lou Roberts is committed but at large. Alma Jean 5 and Gurney Franklin 2 are in state care after brutal injuries and malnutrition, with Gurney still hospitalized and Alma Jean in foster care.
The first cotton boll of the season was brought to The Daily office today. It was produced on the Ervin Collier farm near Wheeler, opened on August 1, and reported from the Collier farm.
Four companies from Decatur Hartselle and Athens totaling about 250 National Guardsmen are in two weeks of maneuvers at Fort Benning Ga. They will return by train and convoy on Sunday August 15. Col Paul J Wolfer commends their enthusiasm and notes good mail service and dining, with a request for newspapers.
Charles Casmus of Montgomery announces the Alabama League of Liquor Licensees a nonprofit group with 80 members aims to recruit about 250 of Alabama’s roughly 3000 liquor licensees. The league will push a self policing program seek recommendations from law enforcement and liquor board and organize chapters in Birmingham and Mobile meetings next month.
A jury prepared to hear the case of James Slim Thomas charged with grand larceny as circuit court reconvened after noon. Presiding Judge Newton B. Powell delivered the charge and arguments were heard from Defense Attorney Russell Lynne and solicitors George Johnson and Philip Shanks. Thomas pleads not guilty by reason of insanity and testified he last remembered being at the American cafe with whiskey in a soft drink bottle before 5 30 a.m. on June 20. He said he found himself beside his truck on Jackson Street with blood on his trousers from a cut thumb. A cousin Mrs Garrison testified about statements by Mrs Lakey.
W. C. Brackin of Decatur 1 farm er brought in the first open cotton boll today to the Producer's Gin. He has five acres of early cotton and grows the DPL-14 variety. Freds Hunt Jr. of the local gin expects ginnings in Morgan county around September 1, a bit earlier than last year. Brackin farms near the Morgan Lawrence county line.
Moscow reports say the United States Britain and France gave their reply to Molotov after a three hour Berlin session. Walter Bedell Smith Frank Roberts and Yves Chataigneau left noncommittal while planning a new four power meeting and a possible Friday communique.
Evans B Keeling and his son of Dallas Texas will dock at Decatur boat harbor on Thursday August 18 as part of an extensive river voyage from the Mississippi to Paducah Kentucky and then up the Tennessee river. William Sims secretary of the Decatur Chamber will guide them around the city.
Luther Fuller general farm products agent of Tennessee Coal Iron and Railroad Co Birmingham will speak to the Decatur Rotary Club Monday at noon at Hotel Lyons. He is noted as a Southern leader in agricultural methods and marketing.
A Tennessee Valley ho cruise drew wide publicity after Motor Boating published a three page spread titled Discovering New Cruising Waters. The June voyage from Paducah Kentucky covered about 650 miles with 50 twin screw cruisers. The article praised hospitality in Decatur and surrounding valley towns and urged cruising the Tennessee as a premier destination. Acknowledgment came from R M Penny of Corinth Mississippi for Wheeler Lake Yacht Club and the Chamber of Commerce.
National Guardsmen were ordered to Polk County in Southeast Tennessee after disorder following primary election day. Two killed and a third wounded. four others hurt in gunplay near Copperhill and Ducktown. Political leader E. H. Crump suffered a major ballot defeat in 20 years of voting. Senator Tom Stewart led unofficial returns.
In Tennessee three congressmen led re nomination in twin statewide primaries. Dayton E. Phillips beat William E. Miller 24 683 to 20 231 in the first district Republican race. John Jennings led Lamb 12 106 to Hobart Atkins 9 124 in the second district. Wirt Courtney edged Pat Sutton 18 028 to 17 436 in the seventh district Democratic contest. James E. Frazier won the Democratic nomination in the third district over John C. Hammer and Robert Morrison with 21 124 10 558 and 6 900 respectively.
