In Lawrence County the heat stays at 104 for a third day as crops suffer. Churches rally for rain with Friday prayers and Huntsville services to follow. Rev Blythe from Moulton leads a countywide call for relief and local prayer meetings.
In Huntsville Alabama August 8 prayers for rain will be offered at the First Methodist church after ten weeks without general rain. Rev. Robert A Echols called the service as crops shrivel and water sources dry up. Farmers sell livestock as forage crops fail and feed for winter becomes scarce.
Fire crews responded to 836 Grant Street where flames endangered a vacant house. Cause not determined. Firefighters extinguished the blaze with little structural damage or loss.
The Probate Judge’s office closed Thursday afternoon with 432 absentee ballots issued. The high figure suggests turnout in the county next Tuesday will be normal and reflects voter interest compared to the prior primary election.
Roland H Gray, a leading Kiwanian, is named head of the Decatur Trade Day Campaign for the year. L R Nash and Foster H Pointer, noted in Kiwanis and Decatur activities, were chosen to work with Gray on planning the annual trade expansion effort. The announcements came at a Kiwanis meeting at the YMCA.
The 1929 figures show 14,812 children of school age in Morgan County including Decatur, up from 14,664 in 1928. Excluding Decatur there are 10,866 children. Decatur has 4,116, bringing the county total to 14,912.
Police report a break in at Claire's Gift Shop on Grant Street last night. Thieves shattered the door lock and took a large quantity of merchandise including silk hosiery and hand made handkerchiefs. the theft was discovered at opening this morning.
Judge Gardner Goodwyn, a noted jurist, will speak for Governor Davis in Decatur at 10 AM on the Moulton route, in Hartselle at 2:30 PM, and in Cullman at 8 PM. His appearances follow a recent Davis visit and are expected to draw large crowds.
Senator J. Thomas Heflin, brushed by minor bruises after a car wreck that injured three party members, continued campaign stops. He arrived in Anniston at 2 30 p m for an afternoon speech and spoke in Montgomery last night, later leaving for Anniston to address a gathering in Zinn Park.
Jim Burnette and T. O. Waldrop praise I. S. Haynie a farmer living near Eva three miles south in Cullman county for having the best crop seen. They say his well balanced fertilizer helped him cope with dry weather and protected the crop.
Judge A G Patterson urged Lauderdale County voters to back his bid for Congress in Lexington and St Florian outlining that Almon’s twenty seven years in office failed farmers and business people. He defended his Public Service Commission record citing reduced Power Company valuation and upheld streetcar service in Florence Sheffield and Tuscumbia.
Tennessee returns from a statewide primary show Governor Henry H. Horton leading renomination by more than 38,000 votes over Memphis attorney E L Gwin after 1 859 of 2 251 precincts reporting Horton 128 882 Gwin 90 443 Representative Cordell Hull leads over Andrew L Todd in the U S Senate race for the six year term with about 120 008 votes to says third candidate scattered. Republican Daniel Carroll Reece leads in the first district race with 16 831 to 15 585 for Sam Price and a White House endorsement letter from President Hoover on Muscles Shoals issue. Senator Brock wins the Democratic nomination for the short term defeating John R Neal 72 759 to 27 191 from 1 450 precincts.
At the city meeting the board approved issuing 12 500 dollars in bonds to fund a sewer system in West Decatur. Hornbuckle Construction Company of Atlanta was awarded the contract for the work. The session mainly covered routine reports and this resolution.
Gulfport Mississippi Aug 8 District Attorney W M Colmer said exhumation of timber inspector Frank A Webb 33 of Eutaw Alabama revealed important evidence after his body was found in a thicket six miles west of Gulfport Webb's skull was fractured Colmer accompanied by Dr E M Fahnestock Van G Webb and Arthur Lang identified Webb last Sunday and Thompson the 23 year old Oklahoma man held without counsel showed a changed demeanor awaiting arraignment as he faces trial for the slaying

The agriculture department pegs this year’s cotton output at 14,362 bales, about half a million bales less than last year, with 62.2 percent of normal condition and drought effects in several states. In Texas the crop is forecast 550,000 bales higher than last year, while New York prices fell about 2.50 a bale after the census figures, with October and December contracts trading around 12.45 to 12.60 cents per pound before partial recovery.

Local business leaders foresee a broader revival as unemployment drops and activity increases.
