Seven Miners Dead in Gilberton Colliery Disaster
Seven miners died and 16 were injured when timbers and debris collapsed at the Gilberton colliery of the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company. Mrs Irene Schroeder and W Glenn Bague both of Wheeling West Virginia were sentenced to die in the electric chair for the December killing of Highway Patrolman Grady Paul near New Castle Pennsylvania. Judge R L Hildebrand announced the death penalty after denying new trials. The governor will set the execution date. The case arose after a gun battle in Arizona in which a deputy sheriff was fatally wounded. The two offered no remarks as doom was pronounced.
