UNICEF speaker David Burgess told volunteers at Elegant Ranch in Hayward that fewer than a thousand paid UNICEF staffers run a multi million dollar operation with only 2 percent admin costs. He noted California leads in support, cited opposition, and described funding, cooperation with CARE and other agencies, and the five year country programs approved by UN representatives. Burgess said governments provide about three quarters of funds, individuals a quarter, and last year raised over 8 million dollars. the U.S. government recently raised its UN contribution to 17 million.
