Washington UPI Ford administration energy proposals would lift regular gasoline toward 70 cents a gallon with 14 to 15 cent increases flagged. Officials note added energy taxes would return to the economy, aiding those least able to pay higher costs.
Striking physicians in Alameda and eight Northern California counties resume duties as hearings and a state effort to form a joint underwriting insurer falter. Hospitals in Hayward and San Leandro brace for possible renewed walkouts if legislators do not deliver a long term fix.
President Ford laughed off a pratfall at Salzburg airport after missing a step while descending from his plane. He joked about the fall being great after a good night’s sleep as First Lady Betty Ford sheltered under a clear umbrella from the rain. aides attributed his tumble to a tired knee acting up after a long day.
Ford completed friendly talks with Egypt's President Anwar Sadat in Salzburg. He said a U.S. plan for permanent peace is taking shape and offered to resume U.S. economic aid to Egypt. Sadat praised Ford and invited him to Cairo as Kissinger's shuttle diplomacy potential resumes.

The Federal Trade Commission proposed rules to end state bans on advertising prescription drug prices. Engman cited price variation up to 200 percent in towns and argued consumers are harmed by nondiscretionary drug costs. The rules would not require advertising but would abolish existing prohibitions, with effect after public comment and hearings.
Vernon Casteel Sr and his son Vernon Casteel Jr. died in swift succession after the son, 19, shot himself in a Dublin garage. The father, upon discovering the body, suffered a fatal chest event en route to Kaiser Hospital. Casteel Jr. was married with a pregnant wife. Sr. was a Pacific Gas and Electric Co. engineer.
South County officials react cautiously to a New state program allowing California students to leave high school after two years with a certificate if they pass a special test. The measure, authored by state Senator Arien Gregorio, would let juniors and seniors exit high school with a diploma equivalent certificate.
