California wildfires rage across 300 mile area amid lightning strikes
About 200 fires raged in California from the Sierra to Los Padres National Forests as lightning sparked blazes. Forest Service crews fought fast moving fires across Plumas Lassen Shasta Trinity Klamath and Mendocino forests with some containment reported by evening. In Ojai a 17/100 acre blaze near a seven mile line along Echo Canyon was targeted for full containment as helicopters shuttled crews to the flames. Six firefighters were injured earlier in the week when a helicopter crash forced air support to pause briefly. In San Diego County a 200 man effort battled a brush fire southeast of the city threatening canyons and homes.
