Saloon Property Seized and Liquor Destroyed in N J Case
In Newark on October 7, 1918 Vice Chancellor Lane ordered injunctions against the Newark saloon of Thomas Hand and the Belleville Pleasure Park as public nuisances. Furniture and liquor were ordered removed and destroyed, with proceeds to the poor funds. Premises closed for one year. Prosecutions by the Anti-Saloon League of New Jersey and the Citizens’ League of Belleville cited Sunday liquor sales and disreputable acts. Warned saloon keepers that habitual Sunday sales will carry penalties, and contempt actions were issued against Hillside Pleasure Park owner William Thaller and Thomas Hand for defying the court.
