Demand for health foods grows driven by consumer desire for minimally processed chemical free items. Safeway plans health food departments in 200 stores this year after opening its first in 1980, with units averaging 800 to 1,000 square feet and stocking up to 3,000 items. The program aims to attract senior shoppers and loyalty from younger customers, per USDA Economic Research Service.
The Wisconsin Laboratory Association will hold its annual meeting Oct. 1 and 2 at the Holiday Inn in Eau Claire. The group covers food, environment and health fields focused on quality control. Thursday registrations run 9 to 10 a.m. with seminars on food plant sanitation, milk drug residues testing, and the Drummond Bog wastewater project, plus a business meeting and banquet. Friday offers seminars on product liability, industrial hygiene, and laboratory instruments and computers.
The National Farmers Organization will hold its state convention October 3 at Assumption High School in Wisconsin Rapids with pre-convention meetings October 2 at the Labor Temple. A guest speaker will be national VP Bob Ardat. Wisconsin Indianhead Technical Institute will sponsor a solar hot water demonstration in New Richmond starting October 3, with three Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.. cost is 10 dollars, preregistration required.
