Dairy support falls to 70 percent of parity from 80 while milk prices stay near 12.80 and 13.10 per hundredweight. Wisconsin’s Proxmire and Kasten opposed the measure as action shifts to the House by Oct. 1.
State ASCS approves eleven grain storage sites in Wisconsin with six in Douglas County and locations in Buffalo La Crosse Pepin Pierce Polk St. Croix Juneau and other counties. Kieran Powers notes most remaining warehouses lie in Rock Sauk Dodge Ozaukee Green Racine Fond du Lac Dane and other counties.
Pepin County Wisconsin melon growers report a 50 percent drop in the 1981 watermelon and muskmelon crop due to blight, anthracnose, and an unusually cloudy August. Everett Poole, Don and Chet Walker, Otto Tulip, and nearby Dondlingers describe vines brown and withered, muskmelons rotting from rind moisture, and watermelons failing to ripen. Despite price expectations, area growers say demand and markets prevent price hikes, with some fields yielding only one crop.
