NFU kicks off protest against 50-cent milk tax
George W. Stone of the National Farmers Union led a rally to start a petition drive opposing the 50-cent per hundredweight deduction from milk checks set to begin December 1. NFU seeks to overturn the tax, push for a supply management dairy program, and urges USDA to sell surplus dairy stocks and curb imports. Stone warned the levy could boost overproduction and hurt many dairy farmers, urging signups to pressure Congress to revise the plan.
