June bugs hatch on schedule in Wisconsin
The Milwaukee Journal reports an unusually large influx of June bugs in Wisconsin this month. Horticultural agent Richard P. Schneider of the University of Wisconsin Extension says the brown beetles nibble leaves rather than sting people and hide underground by day. He notes the life cycle spans three years with two years underground before a final year above ground, and that cool spring may have delayed plant growth, contributing to the surge. Most June bugs die by month’s end.
