Catbird Love and Swift Descriptions From a Wisconsin Almanac
A columnist praises the gray catbird, contrasting it with the flashy rose-breasted grosbeak glamour. He recalls childhood ties to a gray cat and explains why the catbird’s voice and mimicry captivate him. Observations include habitat, arrival dates around May, wintering south of the border, and referral to ornithologist Mr. Robbins. Corps uses pigs to deter seagulls at Soo Canal
U S Army Corps of Engineers at Sault Ste. Marie Michigan says two hogs will share the gulls habitat near the Locks to disrupt diving birds. Engineer James Bray notes the plan edges out a Michigan wildlife department suggestion for mechanical noisemakers as the birds threaten workers safety and may carry disease. Gulls, protected by law, have resisted prior evictions using accoons and foxes over about a century. Nearby farmers proposed hogs hoping to deter the birds.
