Regents Back Wetlands Protection in Wisconsin
The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents endorsed a strict wetlands preservation policy and ordered UW-La Crosse to withdraw its permit request to fill 29 acres of the La Crosse River Marsh for an athletic field. Despite leadership pressure, Chancellor Kenneth Lindner resisted, while DNR Secretary Anthony Earl urged no compromise as agencies opposed the plan. The regents urged buying the full 45 acres and warned that filling marshland would be rejected by federal and state agencies.

Few DNR changes foreseen under new governor
Anthony Earl, secretary of the Department of Natural Resources, told DNR employees there would be no dramatic changes in the department in the near term after Lee S. Dreyfus’s election as governor. He warned against splitting the department and moving headquarters, and predicted some changes with the new administration but no personnel shifts. Earl noted Dreyfus could name two new Natural Resources Board members next May and three in 1981.
