FAA and US fish and wildlife join to curb bird plane strikes
The FAA and USFWS sign an agreement to expand technical help and airport staff training to reduce bird strikes. FAA may fund further USFWS research while airports cut attractants such as standing water pools, roosting trees, and waste dumps to improve safety during takeoffs and landings.

Fishing course at UW River Falls sparks student interest
UW River Falls assistant professor James Helminiak developed a freshwater sport fishing course to improve students’ health, consumer education, and boating skills. The class draws 25 students this fall, includes lake structure mapping, gear selection, dollar budgeting, and guest demonstrations, with a four day trip yielding 86 pounds of fish and two A grades for muskies.

Trout habitat works expand on Kinnickinnic River reach
The DNR funded 6 535 from the Trout Stamp program to cover brown trout along a 3 8 mile stretch of the Class I Kinnickinnic River near the Twin Cities area. Fish manager Bert Apelgren notes the river remains productive due to high water quality while facing pressure from nearby anglers. Trout Stamp funds enabled 21 miles of habitat work this year versus seven last year, with 35 streams in various stages of development. Future efforts may include predator training in Wisconsin duck nesting areas using lithium chloride to deter raccoons and skunks.
