Christmas Bird Count grows into a firm North American tradition
The Christmas bird count draws 30 000 plus observers across North America using boats skis and back windows to tally birds in winter. In Wisconsin totals rose to 53 percent higher in 1985 and chickadee counts reached an all time high of 904 at Medford, prompting scientists to note population trends while enthusiasts seek rarities and personal game in the data.
